I just installed arch yesterday. However, I am having a problem with the sound not working. I notice during the boot that there is a message about 'something alsa' failing to load, but it's too fast for me to read. I had a look in /var/log but couldn't find anything. Anyone who can give me some pointers for how to identify the issue?
edit: just did a reboot and didn't manage to spot the error message (although it now says d-bus failed) but I got this popup for the first time on booting kdemod:
Sound server informational message:
Error on initializing the sound driver:
Device /dev/dsp can't be opened (permission denied)
the sound server will continue using the null output device
to my uneducated eyes it sounds like my user hasn't been added to the audio group, but I have done that.

Have you put up the volume in amixer? Have you added yourself to the sound group?
The wiki has a pretty good page on Alsa.

had a look at the wiki page. Turns out I hadn't set it to remember the setting on boot. Sound is now flowing freely from my speakers.
thanks.
