hi
i must start by stating that i came to arch from ubuntu via linux mint - i know that makes me VERRY spoiled... but then i have an old laptop that i wanted to make faster (especially booting) and in which i don't need all the bells and whistles and unnecessary software that comes bundled with ubuntu... pidgin, evolution, gimp and abiword are pretty much all i need to be productive
so i installed arch through the excellent archie and i'm really impressed with how fast it boots and how fast all the programs load.
problem is... the laptop's onboard ethernet is broken so i have to use a pcmcia ethernet card (that's D-Link DFE-680TXD) and apparently it doesn't get recognized as i plug it in not even if it is plugged when i boot...
specs:
asus m2400e
p4-m 1.8ghz
384mb ram
thanks in advance,
Fred

I think that the pcmcia card is detected. The last entry in your lspci output says so much :

well... i thought as much but then again it's still not working
i've rebooted the laptop and the modem and i'm using the same network to write this so i guess that's not where the problem is...

What does 'dmesg | grep eth' show ?
Offline
$ sudo dmesg | grep eth
eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xa000, IRQ 11, 00:0c:6e:2c:1c:bb.
eth1: ADMtek Comet rev 17 at Port 0x1000, 00:50:BA:80:BE:E2, IRQ 11.
eth0: Media Link Off
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
Offline
Okay, your card is detected fine and an interface has been created for it - eth1.
You have to configure it for usage, though.
A simple 'sudo ifconfig eth1 up' will bring up the interface.
Or you can create a profile in /etc/network-profiles - look at template in that directory to get an idea about how to create a new profile.
What environment do you use, btw ? ( GNOME, KDE, XFCE, .. )
Offline
i tried both ways and none worked...
when i execute 'sudo ifconfig eth1 up' nothing really happens and the configuration file i wrote as a network profile won't work either even after a reboot
then... if i type
$ sudo ifconfig eth1
i get:
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:BA:80:BE:E2
inet6 addr: fe80::250:baff:fe80:bee2/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:311514 (304.2 Kb) TX bytes:468 (468.0 b)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0x1000
i have no idea whether something is wrong with that, do you?
as for the DE i'm using xfce - don't really like kde and gnome is unnecessarily heavy (i'm using gnome on the desktop, tho)
anyway... without a network connection i'm not likely to change DE...
Offline
You just have to configure your interface for usage.
These links should help you get started :

i've already tried the first one and didn't manage to sort the problem out
i'll try the second using the desktop to download the files
thanks for ur time

DAMN!!:D
i'm writing u from the laptop!
i tried again with the configuring network wiki and it's working
problem was that in the /etc/rc.conf section of the dhcp config i had it set to eth0="dhcp" (as i read on the wiki) instead of eth1 as i should've figured out...
