I think pulseaudio will rock... Altho when i tried it few days ago I had lots of dropped sounds etcetera in flash and tremulous...
So either i couldnt properly config it or it needs a bit more polish.
I'd recommend it tho, it solves lots of "multiple programs playing sounds" and "how to get sounds working in game this and that" ...kind of issues (with proper configs )
I don't think it improves soundquality tho, more like opposite (adds latency?)

I use it but it is meant to replace esd arts jack not to replace ALSA, pulseaudio actually uses ALSA to output sounds and can happily coexist with dmix (on my hw this configuration doesn't work well).
Some games and some apps don't work with pulseaudio and never will unless patched, this is the biggest drawback. It is a great esd replacement and works very well with arts, however you will need the libflashsupport plugin for flash and generally setup all apps to use it.

I haven't had the time to actually make it my default audio wrapper system, but I'm planing to, I just have it installed for now, and when I find the time, I'll start using it. I just thought it was a good application to look forward to.
