I discovered that after a few system upgrades, I get a nullPointerException when attempting to print from jEdit 4.3pre9 using Java 1.5. ( I don't print often, so when the problem started is not clear to me.) Both of these applications are working fine on Debian Etch, but the aforementioned exception occurs on Debian Testing and - more importantly - on my distro-of-choice, Arch. This is really eating them up at Ubuntu because Gutsy has the problem too. It is an issue between CUPS and Java. There are some proposed workarounds, but they only work in some situations.
Downgrading my Arch cups package to 1.2.12 from 1.3.x "fixed" the problem. I now get the printer dialog instead of the exception.
So my point here is... Is there a way to "lock" cups in to a fixed version until I manually allow it to be upgraded? I like keeping my Arch up-to-date with -Suy but would like cups to not be automatically included.
Is there a preferred way to handle this sort of thing?

You could try this in pacman.conf with cups 1.2.12 installed.
IgnorePkg = cups

Thanks very much.
I usually RTFM, but I sometimes need help to know which M to R.
