vmware-player and kernel 2.6.23

Has anybody got vmware-player running under the latest kernel (2.6.23)?  I managed to get vmware-player-modules to build by upgrading the the latest any-to-any and vmware-player source.  vmware-player also built fine with the latest source.  However, running vmware-config.pl give the following error:

The following VMware kernel modules have been found on your system that were
not installed by the VMware Installer. Please remove them then run this
installer again.

vmnet
vmblock
vmmon

Execution aborted.

Skipping this by removing /etc/vmware/not_configured (probably not a good thing) allows me to start the daemon and vmware-player but without any networking.

Anyone managed any better?

Re: vmware-player and kernel 2.6.23

I had the same problem when installing  vmware workstation 6 with modified package builds for the newer version. Using the vmware installer and following the wiki it installed easily and works quite well with the new kernel without the any-any patch.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installing_VMware. Perhaps you could do the same with vmware player.

Re: vmware-player and kernel 2.6.23

Vmware player installs quite well using this method. I have been using it instead of waiting for the updates in AUR. If you are planning on bridging a wireless network to use within vmware player you will need to use what is outlined here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38005. Otherwise, you will not have networking available. If you are not using a wireless network you do not need the patch.

Re: vmware-player and kernel 2.6.23

I'm getting the same error though I tried modifying the PKGBUILD for the any-any 114 and the 2.0.2-59824 vmware as suggested by yourself and another user in the comments to the vmware-player-modules package in aur:

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … s=0&SeB=nd

Does anyone have any other ideas what might be causing this grief?

Thanks,
Dusty

Dusty I think you need to install the player using vmware's own installer and apply the patch manually.

I could not get the latest build to work, but doing the mods as highlighted in Dusty's message on the 45731 version worked for me.

Re: vmware-player and kernel 2.6.23

For vmware-config.pl to run, edit /etc/vmware/locations and add something like

file /lib/modules/2.6.23-ARCH/misc/vmblock.ko
file /lib/modules/2.6.23-ARCH/misc/vmmon.ko
file /lib/modules/2.6.23-ARCH/misc/vmnet.ko

Worked for me.
