Arch for the audio/music studio

How about a discussion on Arch as system for audio- and music-recordning.

This area is becoming more and more intresting for linux.

I see good oppertunities of Arch becoming a very good choice for the music studio.
Compare it with http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/ which is a Red Hat based system for setting up a home studio on linux using special apt-get4rpm reposaries.

Hey, arch has got pacman! Let's just get all the packages needed and we're there!

What software is needed? What are the status for them in arch?

The following packages I see as a good start

* ALSA (ok)
* JACK
* LADSPA-plugins (ok)
* Ardour
* Audacity (ok)
* Hydrogen (ok now?)
* Rosegarden-4

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

Jack is in staging, I believe - and there were some problems building an ardour package. Not sure about rose-garden...

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

Since I weekly create and upload audio to our website with Linux, I would like to see Rezound added to the packages.  It should be easy to do, but I haven't had the time.  I have noticed that, as of 2.6.x kernel, sound recording & audio editing seems to be more stable (less alsa crashes).

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

This was one of the things I was looking forward to when we switched packaging systems. Since Arch will provide the base, it makes it easy for people to create specialized repos that transform the distro.

Hopefully someone will create a repo for this, and maybe Arch or the TURs can host it.

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

Hi,

I'm haveing quite a couple of PKGBUILDs laying around here, but most of
which are written in C++, consequently most of them refuse to build with
gcc-3.4

I have a package for Jack with Daemon start script maybe up it next week
Ardour - has gcc issues
Hydrogen - still needs to be testet, seems to be cool
Rosegarden - Dunno, it's KDE isn't it
Muse - I got it build but I don't get it working work with JACK here

protux and libmustux - gcc again

bye neri

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

In case you aren't aware of it, there's a project called AGNULA (A GNU/Linux Audio Distribution) that aims to create two distros devoted to audio and multimedia applications, using only free software.

http://www.agnula.org/project/

Might be another good place to look for apps.

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

I would like to see more availability and testing of "multimedia" packages
eg:

JACK - 0.98.1
Ardour - new beta16 released
ReZound
VST plugin wrapper(s)
Cinelerra - new 1.2.0 released & CVS releases
Jashaka

Arch and the whole community could really benefit.
Keep up the good work.

Muse v0.70 has been released! Now has JACK support, VSTi and much, much more.

A little OT, I'd like to hear your music if you plan to, or already make music, and don't mind sharing it, assuming that it may be influenced by Joy Division in a way.

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

The problem I see with Jack, is that it needs a special kernel module for low latency support as normal users (non root). Don't know if this can be added to the package.

AFAIk this code is part of 2.6 tree anyway. Atleast it doesn't throw errors
trying to initialize realtime mode on root usage.
Try the suid bit on qjackctl to test that.

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

When I do that, I can't start xmms as user, and using jack, it just does not work. I have to start xmms as root also.

Here is some info about it

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

Hey guys, I'm gonna do some research on me own, but seeing as this post is probably grouping most of the musos, I have a question.

My girlfriend is doing music in uni, and I was thinking of settting up a linux box on some (semi)old hardware for her to use. She's ready to use linux (mwahha it's taken a year!), but of course there's certain software that she requires for writing scores, etc.

Now, the ap she uses at the moment is called Sibelius

Could anyone tell me which of these linux apps is similar to this? She needs the software for writing and notation, rather than for hardware input, recording, etc (although I'm sure she'd be interested in that kinda stuff if it was possible).

I'm gonna go do a bit of my own research, but it anyone knows anything offhand, I'd be interested to hear.

Thanks a lot,
T.

LilyPond?  Here's a good article from Linux Journal:

Re: Arch for the audio/music studio

Yeh I managed to find that yesterday, seems it would be good if I could use it with Rosegarden (GUI).

Neither are in the repo's, I think they may have been requested though, I'm gonna have a look now. Unfortunately, they both seem to be fiddly to compile, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. Hopefully there'll be some Arch pkgs soons - don't really want to spend the time compiling it all on this machine, when they won't stay here.

Thanks
T
