Gnome 2.7 repository

Gnome 2.7 will be the playground for new things for the next Gnome 2.8 stable release. As with every big new release of a package, new bugs are introduced. Some are packaging bugs, some are upstream bugs.

To make the upgrade from 2.6 to 2.8 as comfortable as possible, we can get rid of these bugs by testing: packaging bugs while installing applications, upstream bugs while using them.

I'm providing Gnome 2.7 alpha/beta/rc builds during the Gnome 2.7/2.8 cycle, just as I did with Gnome 2.5/2.6.

Currently, Gnome 2.7 is built with these repositories in pacman.conf:
#Gnome 2.7 builds
[gnome27]
Server = ftp://schoolbak.dyndns.org/pub/archlinux/gnome27

#Gnome related packages that didn't make 2.6
[gnome25]
Server = ftp://schoolbak.dyndns.org/pub/archlinux/gnome25

#Up2date stable gnome related archlinux packages
[incoming]
Server = ftp://schoolbak.dyndns.org/pub/archlinux/incoming

These repositories are placed on top of the other ones in pacman.conf. The Gnome 2.5 repository is optional, since it contains development builds of Abiword, Gnumeric and Evolution, but I'm almost sure gnome-panel will require evolution-data-server in the next 2.7 release in my builds (evolution 2.0 should be released somewhere in July, the gnome desktop will integrate with the data stored inside evolution).

Currently the builds are very usable, since most of the code is a fork from 2.6, which is a stable base. I expect the packages to become more unstable when we advance a few version numbers, but when coming closer to a release, it will become stable again.

With the gnome 2.5/2.6 builds, most people were having problems with version numbers after 2.6 got merged into arch officially. People were using a mixed version of my repository and the official archlinux repository. This time, I will stick to versions like gnome-themes-2.8-1j1, so when that package is officially released, it will be upgraded by 2.8-1.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

Thank you for doing this.  Downloading bleeding-edge gnome packages is almost as good as getting a mainline fix.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

Added the sources to my  pacman.conf, but I noticed that when evolution updated to 1.5.9-1 (from 1.4.6) that it did not upgrade cleanly and I'm left with an evolution that does not display any messages or calendar.  Is this a known issue?

Thanks.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

Evolution registers some new gconf schemas, which require your gconf to be shut down using gconftool-2 --shutdown.
After that, starting up evolution should work again. I've seen this problem with the first evolution packages when I didn't have any schemas installed at all.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

Worked like a charm.  Thanks!

One other item I noticed.  Clicking on a link in Evolution no longer opens a browser window.  It used to be just the opposite.  As a matter of fact, the default behavior was the best I'd had in any disto.  It would not only open Mozilla or Firefox, but if an instance was already open, it would open the URL in a new tab.  Whoa!

I've had to fight tooth and nail in other instances to replicate this behavior, and even then it wouldn't often work.

Anyhoo, I've gone into the Gnome Control Center (from within KDE) and changed the preferred applications for the browser, but no go.  As a matter of fact, it goes back to Epiphany after I've changed it to mozilla.

Any ideas here?

Thanks.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

Hmm, you're right about that. Within gnome, it fires up epiphany also, even though galeon is my default browser. I removed epiphany, and now it starts up galeon for each link. I think this is an upstream bug.

if you need help packaging GNOME 2.7 I would like to help out, I did GNOME development packages for Break My Gentoo, and I don't imagine it's much different on Arch Linux.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

There is something screwy with your repo, if your not upgrading from 2.6 a lot of packages don't get installed.

Um, how did you upgrade? If gnome wasn't on the system at all, be sure to do a pacman -S gnome gnome-extra. The group gnome-extra may contain some of the packages your missing.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

Did some upgrades on it yesterday. All new packages have these rules now:

- gconf schemas are uninstalled in pre_remove()
- scrollkeeper database gets rebuilt after each upgrade, install or remove
- no scrollkeeper files allowed outside /usr/share/omf and /opt/gnome/share/omf (compiled scrollkeeper databases in /opt/gnome/var/lib/scrollkeeper is a no-go. Shame on galeon and epiphany)

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

Did some upgrades, gnome 2.7.4 came with a shiny new MIME system.
This MIME system has some problems with file associations, I'm still working on it.

Installing desktop-file-utils and running:

update-desktop-database /opt/gnome/share/applications
update-desktop-database /usr/share/applications

would solve this problem. At least nautilus opens textfiles with gedit now smile

Not all packages are updated for the new freedesktop.org mime system yet. Newer versions will include updated .desktop files for this. I think KDE will also follow these standards.

Things to do: every package that registers mimetypes in .desktop files has to run update-desktop-database $prefix/share/applications in post_install, post_upgrade and post_remove.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

Nautilus will give errors on most files now, the only applications I've seen generating MIME entries in their desktop files now are BeepMP and sodipodi.
Since I'm not completely done with the last gnome run, the MIME stuff will get fixed later this week when new packages are released.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

I think I've seen a bugreport in the BugList about this /usr versus /opt gnome (nautilius) behaviour. The problem is the file structure of the Gnome installation under Arch (/opt respectively).

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

Evolution depends on mozilla because Evolution needs Mozilla NSS/NSPR for SSL. OpenSSL is no longer supported, neither is GNUTLS.
The mozilla package contains a bug which is about not having the NSS includefiles, I compile evolution with a fixed package, but it runs with the buggy package.
The maintainer of mozilla won't fix the bug because he's thinking of a separate nss/nspr package. Since that package still doesn't exist, evolution will depend on mozilla.

Yes, I don't wanna install another big package for evolution, since I am using firefox.
Thank you very much for your reply.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

AFAIK, you can install evolution without mozilla by using the -d switch in pacman. When you run evolution, it will find firefox NSS and NSPR, which are in fact the same as the ones from mozilla.

Because mozilla is part of the gnome desktop because of epiphany, I'll leave it this way until the maintainers come up with a nspr/nss package.

About the MIME things:
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share:/opt/kde/share:/opt/gnome/share will help for that problem. Nautilus even uses KDE programs then to open certain files, since KDE is using the "new" MIME system for a while already.

Re: Gnome 2.7 repository

FYI: if you doubleclick the computer icon on your desktop and the error: "The Catalog view encountered an error while starting up. The location cannot be displayed with this viewer." pops up:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148964

ps: uninstall of gthumb was indeed the solution.
