Home places + home doesn't work!

I've just set my wife's laptop up with Arch a few days ago and am having a couple of teething issues.
One is that Gnome's places/home doesn't work - I click it and nothing happens.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot or solve?

obvious first question: you do have permission to open ~, right?

Of course!
I have a 'home' icon plonked on the desktop and made visible in gconf editor which works fine - but cannot access it via the places menu.
