I have no idea what caused this or what changed since I use gimp rarely. The problem was present with Gimp 2.3 already. First I thought it was due to a missing libgnomeui (gimp complained about it at startup), but it wasnt lethal. Installing it didnt help with this problem.
Gimp 2.3 crashed immediately, 2.4 crashes when creating a new image or performing some options, slice tool leads to a crash for example. I produced following console output by opening gimp and selecting File -> New.

Great. Just after opening a thread i come accross a soultion. It seems to be a problem with the theme or the theme engine used and crashes on dialogs only.
There is some kind of workaround, you have to start Gimp like this:
G_SLICE=always-malloc gimpIt seems to work.

Thanks a heap! ![]()
I was in the middle of an important job when I upgraded my gimp and stuck with it in half-working state when I've searched arch forum rapidly to even faster find your post. If not your info, my work would be a half-hell. ![]()
My gimp-2.4.1 from current crashed/freezed when I've attempted to use crop or roate tools among others. Setting mentioned system variable before starting program solved this.
It's not the best thing when they call you a "member" you know… ![]()
