I have to use the i810 driver, but it seems to be two packages that does that job. I`ve testet both, and they work just fine.
Which of these am i suppose to use:
xf86-video-i810
xf86-video-intel
Is graphics better with one of them, or is this the same driver o.O?
Here is what hardware my laptop contains:
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)

As far as I know... the xf86-video-intel is the newer and more actively developed driver. If you have no problems with it, then you might as well use it.

By my experience, the intel driver is supposed to be better and bug free but this is not my case. The system is more unstable, compiz does not work correcty...
Well, my option is obvious, isn't it?

I tried both, with the intel driver my laptop locks solid when I close the lid. Works fine with i810, so I obviously chose the old one.

I have an acer laptop with an Intel GMA 945, and the xf86-video-intel works WAY better than the i810 considering i810 never worked. It mostly depends on your hardware, the older intel chips are not supported by the intel driver because xf86-video-intel was coded for intel's 9 series of chips.

On my Macbook (Intel GMA 945) the intel driver fixed some issues and created more. Such is life. I use it over the 810 driver to file bug reports and support actively developed software.
Who is this doin' this synthetic type of alpha beta psychedelic funkin'?

the i810 and the intel driver is the same.
intel is a rename of i810 since the driver is compatible with more than just i810.. example:

Well, it seems that you dont have any problem with the new xf86-video-intel driver.
Maybe I am unfortunate, I have a HP laptop which also have the gma900 graphics controller. With xf86-video-intel driver, the screen will blink twice or three times while starting X. And everytime X get start up, the backlight of lcd gets quite bright, brighter than maximum I have seen in Windows. Something strange is that when I press Fn+f10 to turn up the backlight, the backlight comes back to normal value, I mean it dims. But if I restart X, the same thing above will repeat.
The blinking problem must be a new feature introduced in the new intel driver, since under Windows with new intel driver installed, screen will blink once in the booting process too.
The backlight problem must be a bug. I have tried openSUSE 10.3 and fedora 8, they come with xorg 7.3, and both have the problem I mentioned above.

I don't think so.. the intel driver might include a symlink to i810, permitting you to avoid changing your configuration files etc, but that doesn't mean i810 and intel is the same.
I my case, using the intel driver instead of i810 gives me a highly unstable system, hard lockups, etc.

Heh, looks like I'm not the only one concerned. Well, there's nothing to be concerned about, a little visit to the official site will tell you it's still not stable.
This' an upgrade to the i810 driver code, taking into consideration the new (somewhat) line of Intel's on-board offerings & their features. I suppose a re-write was needed, since the i810-based chips were used quite some time back. This' supposed to work for all (from a to z) cores including GMA 950 (that's the graphics accelator, 945GM is the chipset) & the new X series. I too had hoped this would be far better in support (like working on direct rendering, improving performance, not needing INTEL_BATCH=1 etc), but I noticed things got worse when coupled with Xorg 7.3 & Compiz Fusion. As I'd updated all 3 at the same time, I don't know which was at fault:
(1) Screen flickers twice when X initiates
(2) Freeze when running compiz
(3) X crash when running compiz & multi-tasking
(1) could be due to (a) the new way Xorg handles graphics & hotplugging, (b) how Xorg relates to the new xf86-video-intel driver, or (c) the driver itself. (2) & (3) could be due to (a) Compiz (Fusion) code, or (b) how Compiz (Fusion) relates to the new driver, (c) the driver itself, or (d) how Xorg AND Compiz Fusion relate to the new driver.
I've also noticed I can never achieve vertical synchronisation (tearing no matter what), though the root of the cause can be hardware limitation. Driver aside, the framebuffer module could benefit from a few improvements, widescreen still doesn't work for many while vesafb has no problem providing vga=866. I'm no longer running a 3D window manager, largely based on frustration over auto-loading pitfalls in KDE & the above issues, so the new driver works alright without any bling
I need real, proper pen and paper for this.
