x86 vs x86_64

I have arch installed on my desktop (686) and laptop(x86_64)(64 bit AMD Turion - not dual core)

My desktop is an old P4 2.4 ghz with a brookdale 845 chipset and a cdrom drive.512MB RAM

My laptop is a Compaq v3000 series with NVIDIA Go 6150 graphics and DVD/RW drive Broadcom wireless and 1GB ram. I have nvidia 100.14.19 driver installed.

Funnily arch boots faster on my desktop than on my laptop. Just boot time. once booted arch64 on my laptop is just as fast or even maybe marginally faster and responsive than my desktop.

In the boot sequence 'Waiting for devices to settle' seems to take much longer on x86_64 than on x86.

Any thoughts or is it a configuration issue on my side

I don't have this problem with my laptop and Arch64, but it seems to stop at UDEV events for a second or two.

I have a 5-7 second delay in both Arch64 and Arch32. I'm running arch32 under emulation though..

Why is that funny? A desktop is faster than a laptop, generally. Especially when it comes to hard disk.
