Any Slackers Here?

I'm just curious as to how many Slackware users or use to use Slackware users there are here.

I just want to know why people decided to move over to Arch over Slackware.

I'm still honestly unsure at the moment myself, as I love the feel / just seems to work way of Slackware, but I love the speed / simplicity / pacman of Arch. Since they are both quite good I'm finding myself torn smile.

Thanks.

Re: Any Slackers Here?

I used Slack 9.1 before Arch, and if I changed back to anything else, it'd probably be Slack. It's just a great, solid distro. I like Arch, however, because of the pacman system. It's quick and the system's very up-to-date. However, like I said, Slack is very good, especially with Swaret and Dropline GNOME.

I used Slack before Arch.

Arch has an even better config layout than Slackware, and of course has a much better community and package management system.

I hated Swaret and Dropline. They're hacks.

I always thought that the whole goal of Linux is a "hackable" system, configurable to your needs...

Re: Any Slackers Here?

I agree with you Zephirias.

One thing I like about Slackware is that it's proven. Because Arch is still new it does have its hiccups here and there, but usually only package related and not system related. I still feel more comfortable using slack right now.

I do however still use AL and I love pacman. Swaret is ok... but still it's not intergrated with Slackware like pacman is with Arch, so it doesnt run as smoothly, IMHO.

Dropline is SWEET and combined with Slackware its pretty hard to beat.

Re: Any Slackers Here?

I was used to be a slacker before I tried Arch. Two main reasons for leaving Slackware are: 1, its BSD startup style, that makes some troubles with some applications specially some commercial ones. I think Arch 's initial script is really simple and beautiful. 2, Don't check the depedence at all. which brings many problems so I have to crack with it mannually. I am lazy, I don't like that.
What's more, I do find Arch's forum, developers, package maintainers, the whole community is so warm-hearted, and helpful, so I am just addict to the Arch, and only worry about if there is no Arch for someday, say due to lack of fund to afford bandwith.
Welcome to be a happy Archer.

I think Arch uses the BSD style init.

I may be some point wrong, but I think it's SysV.

Re: Any Slackers Here?

I used slackware before arch and it was great. I loved the simplicity. The slackware/swaret/checkinstall trio was quite good.

I still have it installed but i didn't go there ever since i installed arch. Pacman/abs are great tools and i don't think i will try any other distro in the near times.

Arch uses BSD style, same as Slackware, not SysV.

I used Slackware before i found LFS, then crux (for just a little bit..), then debian and then arch.  wink

Re: Any Slackers Here?

I'm running slackware on my server and my workstation. Tried to switch my workstation to arch after I succesfully installed arch on my laptop smile but run into some little but irri problems one of them is lots of spaces between my letters and some problems with my ati radeon

Almost run slack with dropline gnome for a year but now switched to kde.
swaret + checkinstall is a real nice feature smile

Re: Any Slackers Here?

I am also a converted Slackware user, and I loved Slackware, a lot, and still do. I was however interested in some sort of dependency checking, like the one Arch offers. As Arch is also keeping the KISS principle, I see no reason not to give Arch a go. I'm hooked, to say the least.

Re: Any Slackers Here?

I use Arch but also use Slackware as well as 3 other distros.  All have their +'s and -'s and choice is a good thing.  I use whichever one suits my mood that day, a minimal XFCE4 or a full-blown KDE desktop with all the eye candy turned on.  Comes in very handy since I'm running the unstable branch of all of them and sometimes the upgrades go well and sometimes they don't.  Just boot into something else until it gets sorted.  Does anyone really have a monogamous relationship with their distro ?

Arch vs. Slackware?  Ask me in 10 years.  If Arch stays true to it's roots and develops a following half as strong as Slackware's, it will go down in Linux history as one of the most successful distros ever.

Re: Any Slackers Here?

Unless you have a small hard disk, why limit yourself to one distribution? I have arch, slack, and gentoo on my box. It is not hard to keep them all up-to-date. I have learned about Linux from installing and using each of them. Also can be useful in troubleshooting.

I still have Mandrake and Knoppix/Debian installed on my box, but ever since I found Arch I've been fully satisfied... It was good of Judd to make a distro that suited me so well.  8)

Re: Any Slackers Here?

im still a slack user. waiting for the new release to come. arch is very good. but i like checkinstall in slackware where i dont have to edit PKGBUILDs . also, slack takes more care which apps will have SUID/SGID bit set. hopefully security will be priority in arch.

Re: Any Slackers Here?

I see Arch as "Slackware with more packages", really ;-)
Sure, there are other differences, but both are easy to install, easy to configure, and easy to use. Using either, I feel equally in control.

But in Arch, I have the flashplugin, the foobillard, the grip, the mplayer, the win32codecs, the sylpheed, the frozen-bubble, the emelfm, all one pacman -S away. Too easy.

I feel negative!

But I changed it. I don't want to offend anybody, at least, not too much.

So "I won't deny that there aren't good people out there" really did mean "I will confirm that there aren't good people out there" ;-). How offending :-)

Re: Any Slackers Here?

Oi, I see, grammar interpretation...

But now, I'm feeling really negative.  I'm tempted to set it to another quote I like: "I'm sure glad you aren't people, cause I *hate* people!"

I'm getting into my antisocial craze again... don't worry, soon I won't even want to come here anymore at all and you won't have to put up with me. wink

But... We like putting up with you ;-)

There's nothing wrong with a little misanthropy now and then. Helps you focus on what you really want. Alternatively, you can yell at people ;-)

Re: Any Slackers Here?

i'm pretty much a die hard slack user.

and the only reason i stoped using it was becouse some guy told me arch was just like slackware, but then with integrated swaret/slapt-get, yet even beter then that.

well he wasn't telling the truth, but since i'm lazy i din't feel like reverting back to slackware. (wel atleast for one of my pc's. the others are still all slack 9.1)

why slack, you might ask?

well it's simple, it's clear, it's geek friendly, and it's a breeze to maintain.
