2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

Hi
i just placed the new "Core Dump" TEST ISO
to the mirrors eg:
ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/rc-iso/2007.11/

1 week testing should be enough,
I tested them in kvm-qemu and didn't find an issue.

Changelog:

GENERAL:
- kernel 2.6.23.1 usage
- RAM usage has been revisited, these are the new recommendations:
     * FTP ISO, CORE ISO: arch boot image
160 MB RAM x86_64/i686 (all packages selected)
     * CORE ISO: lowmem boot image
96  MB RAM x86_64 (all packages selected)
85  MB RAM i686   (all packages selected)
64  MB RAM i686   (only base packages selected)

FIXES:
- fixed intel wireless automatic module loading (arch boot image)
- fixed auto prepare of harddisk (lowmem boot image)

As usual check md5sum before using the images and also be aware of the new
RAM recommendations the images have.

Have fun
greetings

Re: 2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

I will download and test this in qemu once the mirror I use has the isos.
Thanks for your hard work tpowa.
I already tested -0.2 earlier today and it worked brilliantly in qemu but I'll test -0.3 as well.

Edit:. I just tested -3 core iso in qemu. It launched and installed fine.

I used the .3 x86_64 release to install a server with 4 CPUs. It worked just great, and I did not have any trouble whatsoever. Great work.

Tested 32bit ftp iso v.0.3 with virtualbox...

No problems at all.

(seems its supereasy to install arch nowadays... just hit enter and i got into xorg without configuring anything....)

tpowa, do you still plan on releasing isos with 2.6.23 kernel or are you going to wait for the 2.6.24 kernel?

I plan to move the core rebuild this evening...everything works and nobody told me the opposite. Several devs had signed it off. There is no reason why I shouldn't move it. So there is only your exams on thursday, which holds it back wink

Re: 2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

I just reinstalled my desktop with this latest ISO.  Worked fine.

One note, there seems to be a typo on one screen.  In the system config section, a window labeled "PRECONFIGURATION?" reads:

Use 'hwdetect' results from Configuration dialog for /etc/mkinitcpio.d/kernel26-fallback.conf.
This ensures consistent ordering of your hard disk co controllers.

It's got an extra "co" in there. Or, if it's meant to be "co-controllers" it needs a dash.  But I think it just doesn't belong.  Also I think the first line needs a question mark.

I also got several "Soft CPU lockup" errors, although that might just be my computer? I don't have the exact error, sorry.

I didn't notice anything else.

Everything went fine, all the changes went unnoticed to me. IMHO, is going to be a solid release.

Re: 2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

The installation went fine.

just three little things:

1) I got this message a couple of times:
"INIT: Id "c0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"
Somewhere on the forum I read that you would try to fix that message, although it's not a real issue, it doesn't look nice either.

2) I remember this from the other iso's too:
When I deselect iwlwifi-drivers and install ipw3945-drivers instead, still iwlwifi gets added to the MODULES-line in rc.conf instead of ipw3945; so I have to replace iwlwifi with ipw3945 in the MODULES-line and add the deamon ipw3945d to the DEAMONS-line.
It's not too much of a bother but it would be better if fixed I suppose, there are quite a lot of people that still need those drivers.

3) It seems that, in time, a little configuration of the 'Install Packages' part of the installation went wrong.
From the 'Official Arch Installation Guide' when it comes to the point of 'Package Selection':

(...)you have the opportunity to specify whole package groups from which you'd generally like to install packages, then fine-tune your coarse selection by (de)selecting individual packages from the groups you have chosen. (...)
The "Select all packages by default?" question can be easily misunderstood; Basically you are asked whether you want all the packages in the categories you just chose to be selected or not. If you select YES, the whole list of packages contained in the chosen categories will be displayed and selected, and your job will be to deselect what you do not want. If you select NO, the same list of packages will displayed, but only packages of the BASE category will be selected, and you'll have to explicitly select any other packages you want to install.

With my installations till now, cause I need the ipw3945 driver for example, I always need to check base, lib and support categories. At the question "Select all packages by default?" I always choose NO, but after that I will have to select all base packages myself, so the pre-selection of all base packages is gone somehow. I don't know for how long this is going on cause I am still very newbie.

That's all I think tongue I hope you did well on you exams; I'm getting behind at university with all this arch-stuff to play with big_smile

Re: 2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

2) is not fixable because we do not provide, ipw3945 on the ISO and so it must fail.
This issue will be soon gone because .24 provides iwlwifi inside the kernel and it's unclear if ipw3945 will be still supported on kernels > .23, at the moment it is not compilable on .24 kernels.

Re: 2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

this is something different the install environment doesn't have ipw3945d support only iwlwifi
you can use the ipw3945 in support to get it into your installation but the environment is iwlwifi only.

tpowa, there's a tiny issue. the setup says vc5 is used for setup logging. but only vc 1-4 and vc12 are accessible.

Re: 2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

hrm in my test it was sued for logging during package download, me shrugs.
well a 0.5 release is probably needed due to the stupid cpusoftlockup issue which will be solved in .9 kernel.

Apart from my specific issue already mentioned under Networking, all of the changes were also not noticeable to me.

This is looking to be a fine release, keep up the good work! :-)

Re: 2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

Select a custom mirror to install from.

When you get to Configuration -> Pacman-Mirror :

The 686 2007.8.2 installer would ask if it
should keep the mirror that was used for the
installation.

The 686 2007.11-0.4 installer does not give that
option.

Re: 2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

I just tried out the new test iso. After reboot, I found that the default path is not set correctly:

#echo $PATH
/usr/gnu/bin:/ysr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin

That's for root. I've checked logins.def, it seems that the SUPATH was defined correctly in logins.def. After careful comparison to a working arch installation, it seems that /etc/profile is missing. I've reinstalled bash package, and /etc/profile is still missing. What's the proper way of getting /etc/profile back? pacman -S filesystem?

[EDIT]: looks like it was a bash package problem. Today's update brought profile back.
