laptop fan keeps reving up/down

Dell Inspiron 5160

I setup p4_clockmod and i8kmon like the wiki for the 5100 series says. Apparently the cpu scaling and fan controls are working but the fan speed is quite annoying. It doesn't stay at a happy medium speed like in windows, but keeps revving at full speed then off and back again. This doesn't sound like a healthy thing for the fan to keep doing. Any ideas?

Re: laptop fan keeps reving up/down

Dell bios is buggy and on some models the BIOS fan control won't get disabled.  You are having a tug of war between the BIOS and i8kmon.  I'd disable the fan control in i8kmon...

Re: laptop fan keeps reving up/down

Ok that works better. It does throttle up and down a little still but it's a lot better than shutting off then spinning up non stop. Thanks.
