I just recently installed Arch Linux, and was quite impressed except for the following problems:
[These two solved thanks to FizDev]
Problem 1: KMail hangs as soon as I start it. As in, no response from anything, completely inoperative. It worked the first time I used it, then after that it just died. It works fine in Kontact, though.
Problem 2: When I try to open certain applications (Kontact, Kate, KWrite, maybe others) they will load for about 5 seconds, appear to stop, and open about a minute later.
EDIT: These are fixed, and Arch is now stunning me with its speed.
[This one not solved]
Problem 3: When I try to enable Xorg's "composite" extension, I am greeted with an empty black screen at KDM startup, which does not respond to anything. I think this stems from a xorg.conf error, but having little experience with Xorg composite I don't really know what's wrong.
This is my xorg.conf, with the entries which might be causing problems commented out. I checked my Xorg.0.log, which seemed to be going fine until the very end until it spouted out a bunch of DRI-related stuff and then "Backtrace:". I have an Acer Aspire 3100-1450 with an AMD Sempron 64 3500+ (1.8 GHz) and an ATI Radeon X1100.

If anyone could tell me which of these entries is causing problems and how to fix it, I would be grateful.
Problem 4: As I type this Konqueror has started hiccuping.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

For the problems 1 & 2 it might just be that your loopback is not enabled and that your hostname isn't set up correctly.
Check this : http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FAQ … be_fast.21
Also, just to be sure, what version of KDE are you using? (3.5 or a beta of KDE 4)

Thanks FizDev, I didn't realize I had to do that. Arch is now blazingly fast - most apps open before Katapult fades out . The difference is about a factor of 100 from previously, and a factor of 10 from Windows. Go Arch!

For your problem #3, could you post the output of the command?
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

found on the forums: How about
grep "EE\|WW" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Wow. Cryptic-tacular. This is with all commented lines in the above xorg.conf uncommented. I have no idea what half of these mean, but the full Xorg.0.log ended rather distressingly with this:
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 9, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:01:05.0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 9, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 9
drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci:0000:01:05.0Backtrace:
Again, no experience with Xorg troubleshooting, so this is as transparent as a lead sheet. Any help would be awesome.

Hmm... well first I'd remove the "type1" from the font paths and modules, unless you want it (pacman -Sy xorg-fonts-type1)
Then I'd try to install acpid
pacman -Sy acpid
That's (probably) 2 less warnings. Now, I'm not sure but seeing that there are no errors : the problem is probably somewhere else... maybe KDM itself. Could you try GDM to see?

I tried gdm, and the results were:

Pretty much the same as the first, but without the type1 error. Speaking of fonts, do you know how to turn on font anti-aliasing?
EDIT: Wow, why not try looking in the Control Panel! D'oh.
Thanks for your help. I'm sorry my responses haven't exactly been prompt - I keep telling myself Real Life is for wimps but somehow I get dragged in anyway.

OK, I'm making progress. I found that if I set DefaultDepth 24 in my "Screen" section, it worked OK. I now (theoretically) have AIGLX with Composite. However, I get an error "[dri] radeondrigetversion failed to open the drm [dri] disabling DRI" and dri is not working. The only other warning I got said something to the effect of "DRI forced on, this is not officially supported at the hardware level and may cause instability or lockups." Am I screwed as far as Composite goes?
