cups authentication failed

I just upgraded Openoffice and that knocked out my printer. so I went into print manager went to localhost 631 and went through the procedures. I have an hp psc2210 whose driver is downloaded and recognized through the manager. but when i get to user and password I get authentication failed. I have used root and password, and every combination of user and password for every program/account I have on the computer and internet, I have even tried blanks and zeros and still no good. Any idea what to do or where to look to find what the hang up is for the authenticator not to recognize me?

Have you installed hplip? I only can give you an advice for xfce: You have to activate cups through the xfce Menu.
