[SOLVED] Xorg problem: fglrx, startx & Xorg -configure

Hi,

On a HP 8510p notebook (Core 2 Duo, AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600)

I have just installed Arch Linux, did a system update (pacman -Syu), installed the catalyst package, which depends on xorg-server, among others.

When I do a "Xorg -configure" it fails with a "Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting". As I see in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I don't get an (EE)/error. I just can' understand why the X server fails.

Obs: When I do a "startx", with a custom and minimalist xorg.conf, my notebook stops to respond (doesn't function Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Alt-F2,3..., Ctrl-C... noting) and the screen is all black.
But first, I think it should work the "Xorg -configure"

When I do "startx", like I said, it seems that X is starting, the display changes from grey to black and dark-grey again... but then I can't do nothing to exit, but to press the power button.

So, as no "hwd -x" (uses lshwd -> Segmentation fault) or "Xorg -configure" (Caught signal 11. Server aborting) works, I wrote a xorg.conf by 0, googleing around and inspiring me from the Arch Wiki.

I have no ~/.xinitrc (I have tried with one who had an exec xterm, but no success)

I have modified the xorg.conf and have tried to start X with vesa driver, and it works. So I suppose it is something wrong with fglrx driver.

This might not be directly useful, but I've had a lot of success with the open source radeon drivers (xf86-video-ati).
I prefer them as they have AIGLX support, which was (still is?) missing from the proprietary drivers.

That's the trick that every ATI owner comes up against sooner or later. wink
Seriously, though, fglrx is tricky to get to work, especially the first time. I have used all sorts of drivers on all sorts of hardware; intel i810, nvidia, savage, trident, but I only tried the fglrx drivers when I was brand new at GNU/Linux- and I pulled my hair out trying to get it to work. If you can get the xf86-video-ati drivers to work, that may be a suitable replacement for you, otherwise, scour the forum, wiki and the net for hints.

Thanks. Indeed it was a change... but not a final fix:

* I have ~/.xinitrc with exec startkde
* In /etc/inittab I have the last line changed to use kdm instead xdm

At this point, when I do startx it starts KDE, with vesa driver. All it's OK.

* I added fglrx in the MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf
* I have modified xorg.conf file to use fglrx instead of vesa
* startx at the command prompt.

KDE starts, I can move the mouse pointer, as the KDE continues to start components. But when it finishes and says "KDE is up and running", the notebook freezes and I am forced to press the start button.

If I add kdm in the DAEMONS array... I supose that after a restart, it will start X automaticaly. Isn't it? At the moment, I don't want that. Until all will work ok, I prefere to boot without graphical interface.

"hwd -x" doesn't work for me, as it uses lshwd and this ends with a "Segmentation fault" right after the listing of Ricoh SD Card Reader.

As I'm working, during the week I don't have much time to test my Arch Linux. But for the next weekend I'm planing to:
- Test various Otions in the Device section of the fglrx driver (in xorg.conf). I managed to start X with fglrx, but with a combitation of Otions and the most important, I think it was "NoAccel" "on". But in this setup, moving a window on the desktop went very bad.
- Give a try to the Open Source drivers. Question: They (xf86-video-ati) will work for Mobility Radeon HD 2600?

Modifying rc.conf between startx doesn't do anything, it's getting parsed only on boot. You have to modprobe fglrx manually.

remove the ~/.xinitrc entries and the inittab entries. Leave kdm out of rc.conf for now and then restart.

This will boot your pc up into runlevel 1 which will give u root access and the ability to login and type startx at the command prompt.

then try starting x and see what happens, make sure u reboot after making all the above changes that I have quoted from others post. smile

IT WORKS!

After a system update (pacman -Syu) I have noticed the new versions of hwd and xorg-server. And, now...

... when I do "hwd -x" it realy generates me a xorg.conf in /etc/X11/. But, for the record, I didn't like this one.
... when I do "startx" (as a regular user), it starts KDE with accelerated mode, and I can even exit back to command prompt without any problem. Well, there are some warnings in Xorg.0.log, but the functionality is there, like I wanted.

My setup:

a) /home/user/.xinitrc does contain a "exec startkde" to start KDE by typing "startx" at the commend prompt.
b) /etc/inittab is configured to start in the runlevel 3 by default and has kde as the window manager for the runlevel 5 (when I'll be switching to runlevel 5 by default)
c) I have added the fglrx module in the MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf

d)The working and minimalistic /etc/X11/xorg.conf for my notebook HP 8510p (15.4" WXGA 1280x800, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600)
