[SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

Hi,
I have noticed that since the last upgrade, the Gimp has got ultra sluggish, especially if I try to use my pen tablet. When I start using the brush, my CPU usage goes up to 100% and the lines are drawn with a lot of delay. I've been using the Gimp before, and never experienced such an issue. Does anybody have any suggestion?

My machine is an Intel P4, 2,60 MHz, 512MB RAM and ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics card.

I recently had to reconfigure my xorg.conf from scratch and also noticed that Compiz is not working anymore for me, while it used to work. I am using the open source drivers. Could it be related to this?

Here are the relevant section of my xorg.conf file.

Thanks for your help smile

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

Hmm, that is interesting. I have just tested it with Gnome, and it works perfectly. I was having issues with Ratpoison and Openbox. It's totally unuseable with them, but I would like to use at least Openbox with the Gimp...

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

maybe it depends on some gnome specific services .. try starting `gnome-settings-daemon` in those DE sessions

Snappy under KDE here. I've no tablet, though.

Fine for me in Ratpoison. No tablet, and the image was only 800x600.

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

Ok, I've tried running gnome-settings-daemon in Ratpoison, but no joy, still the same.
I have tried with the mouse only this time, and it was as slow as yesterday. It's very odd that I'm the only one with this problem...

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

Wow, I switched back to Gnome, and the Gimp was working fine. Now I've set OpenBox as my WM within Gnome, and the Gimp is acting funny again... What's wrong with OpenBox?

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

Finally I found out!
It was xcompmgr which was slowing everything down... too bad, I liked the composite... I'll disable it everytime I need to draw I guess...

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

Have you tried EXA acceleration with AIGLX disabled? I found that to be much faster for 2D compositing (xcompmgr, Xfce's built-in compositor) than XAA. My card's a 9200, so YMMV of course.

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

Sorry, I didn't quite get what you mean.
I don't have neither EXA or XAA enabled, so you suggest I disable AIGLX and enable EXA instead?

Thanks smile

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

WOW! I'm totally impressed. I've never seen my machine going that fast.
I have disabled AIGLX and enabled EXA, it's ultra fast, and xcompmgr doesn't cause any problem anymore.
I guess AIGLX was not working properly, and I've been using it for such a long time.
Good bye Compiz, I think we'll meet again in a very remote future tongue

Thanks a lot for your tip, dunc big_smile

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

XAA is the default, so you were using it even if you didn't know. smile

I think AIGLX works fine, so long as you're running Compiz (or Beryl). But if you're only using a 2D window manager it's just an extra layer that you don't need, and as you've found, switching to EXA (which doesn't work with AIGLX) speeds things up considerably.

Glad to be of help.

Re: [SOLVED] Slow Gimp 2.4.1?

Well, that explains why I wasn't totally satisfied with Ratpoison (et al.)'s performance.
Anyway, Compiz was never so responsive as it is OpenBox now, and I think it's quite obvious, but with AIGLX enabled even when not using 3D acceleration, I couldn't feel much of a difference... well *now* I have a good reason to stick with OB tongue
