Xorg & ATI issues.

Hello there. I'm having the same problems that the guy on http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=40308 had. But I didn't get them solved bydoing what he did. So, I first tried with the ATI free drivers, radeon. It didn't worked, when I started gdm it went to a black screen with a large blue (like the gdm default background) square on the bottom left corner (like this: http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/8436/sgi1068ta3.jpg. And I could use the mouse, but I couldn't do anything else. It was like the PC crashed, I still could hear the music I was listening to on mplayer, so it didn't totally crashed. Then I tried fglrx. This time it got to the gdm login screen, but there it crashed (http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/1917/gdmfs3.jpg.

I'm kind of stuck. Right now I'm using the vesa driver. It works great, but I need the direct rendering for gaming purposes big_smile. I'd really like to fix this as quick as possible. I used Debian, and I could use the ATI free driver with direct rendering. I'm not comparing Arch with Debian, it's just for reference.

Should I report this as a bug? It seems like I'm not the only one with this problem..

Look.. I have found that I'm having some issues* with the USB mouse. All it's working OK without the mouse. Anyway, I'm using as "CorePointer" the Synaptics Touchpad (until I'll figure out what's wrong with the mouse).

Try disconnecting all the peripherals, and try with or without the mouse. Take care and use the server flag "AllowMouseOpenFail" "on".

* Tha issue is: By having the USB mouse connected, all the windows on the desktop doesn't render properly, by moving them.

Hello guy from the other thread. I tried disconnecting everything but the monitor and a PS/2 keyboard, instead of my mouse and keyboard combo. It didn't work.

I'm kind of getting frustrated hmm

After downloading hwd5.2-1, run hwd-u to upgrade the xorg and usbdefs.

If you do, change the "DefaultColorDepth 16"  to 24.
Your vga card may not be listed in hwd's xorgtable. For me to update the table, run "lspci -nn" and post the result here.

Your vga card is listed in xorgtable. What does "VGA_compatible_controller_ID" say in /etc/hwd/pci.hw

grep VGA_compatible_controller /etc/hwd/pci.hw

PS. Did you noticed my edit in previous post: "If you do, change the "DefaultColorDepth 16"  to 24"
