[SOLVED] OpenBox uses the default xml files instead of ~

OpenBox uses the default xml files when I have custom files in ~/.config/openbox/

What could be causing it? There are no errors in ~/.xsession-errors

Check if the files have proper permissions... they should be 644 (read/write for user, read only for others)

Permissions are correct.

Ok for some reason it is trying to save settings to /root/.config/openbox/ when I try to change something in obconf. Why is this?

Just a guess, are you running openbox as root?

Maybe you are running obconf as root?

This definitely sounds like a permissions issue... either you are running a program or session as root, or the files themselves are owned by root (regardless of their r-w-x settings).  Did you follow the instructions on the Openbox wiki?

Re: [SOLVED] OpenBox uses the default xml files instead of ~

I fixed the problem. Thanks for the help, it was definitely a permissions issue. I still am not sure what exactly because Every file in ~/.config/openbox/ was owned by the user and permissions set to 644. However, copying everything from /etc/xdg/openbox to ~/.config/openbox again solved the issue. I must have used sudo to copy the files before.
