Cause of flickering artifacts?

As of about 1am EST, today, I noticed thin black lines appearing on the left and right sides of my screen.  They are about one pixel think and the ones on the left edge are longer than those on the right edge.  The screen behaves when absolutely nothing is changing on it, but when there is activity the black lines move around several times per second.  It reminds me of the problems I had with Ubuntu, except that was more of a white fuzz.

Yesterday was when I upgraded to xorg-server 1.4-6.  If anyone has xorg-server 1.4-5 in their pacman cache, could you PLEASE send this to me before upgrading so I can see if that was the cause?

After upgrading to xorg-server 1.4-6, I restarted X and didn't notice any flickering right away (although it may be just because I wasn't paying attention).  The main reason I was using the computer yesterday was to download stuff on aMule.  So I started aMule and went to bed.  I also closed the lid of the laptop which turns the screen off.

The whir of the hard drive woke me up at about 1am so I checked to see how far along the download was and the system was frozen at the Ameoba screensaver.  (I guess Xscreensaver kicks in even when the screen is off).  Rather than press the power button, I pressed Alt+SysRq+REISUB to restart cleanly and it worked.

The system restarted and THAT is when I noticed the flickering.  So I'm guessing the reason for it is a combination of 1) Leaving my computer on way too much 2) Upgrading the Xserver 3) Alt+SysRq+REISUB might have caused damage or 4) the freeze that forced me to use Alt+SysRq+REISUB might have been the cause.  It all seems very strange to me.

So for background information, I am using kernel 2.6.23.8-1 and the r128 driver with DRI and GLX enabled.  My card is an ATI Rage Mobility M3 and my laptop is a Thinkpad a22m 2628-S1U.  Here is my xorg.conf file:

Update:  Oddly enough the problem has corrected itself.  I left my computer off for about 3 hours, and just turned it back on now... X behaves exactly as it did before.  One thing I forgot to mention was that the times that X flickered with artifacts, before going into X, the console had a margin on the left hand side.  Every piece of text starting with the debug messages was indented.  When I started my computer up just now, the debugging messages, init messages, login and shell were all right at the edge of the screen like I'm used to, and starting X went off without artifacts.  The strangeness in X and the console makes me think it's a problem with the monitor itself and not X.

I'll tell you if it happens again.
