ASUS system freezes input/output error

Using gnome, metacity WM, 915 resolution, Kernel recent

Randomly (cause undetermined) the machine will be unable to access the hard drive. It will stop being able to open/run programs. I can access the gnome menu but cannot even run a shutdown script. Gnome will display an input/output error when I try to do so.

Cannot initiate shutdown using another virtual console either. This problem only starts after the machine has loaded the desktop. A hard shutdown will fix the problem for somewhere from 5-200 minutes.

Right now I'm a little lost. Leaning toward hardware malfunction, but not sure were to start...RAM,HD,CPU???

Any suggestions...tests or logs to look at?
