Freezes, Freezes and Freezes

Hi All

since 2 or 3 weeks, I'm experiencing A lot of Freezes on my PC.
It only happesn, when I leasve the PC unattended, means I just let it run w/o brwosing, opening files etc.
After an hour or so tze Desktop freezes.

The programmes which were running before freezing are still running (download, htop, etc).
You can't just clink anything or use the keyboard.

There is nothing in the logs.
So I started to revert back to kernel 2.6.20, the older xorg, then older nvidia drivers.
nada, niende  if you just leave the pc alone it will freeze.

What the heck is this?
It was running fine for months.

Other distros boards are also full of similar complaints.

Anyone an idea?

Which window manager are you using? I was getting those freezes after I got my laptop back from repair. Recently, I stopped using kwin and started using openbox inside of a KDE session and I haven't gotten a freeze yet.

I use kde kwin, but it was working for months,
so somehting broke it.
Its X that uses then almost 100% CPU Load and ist jumping from one cpu core to another.

Same problem I have. Here's a bug report for similar instances in the matter:

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7513

Possible "fixes" for this problem are downgrading to the 96xx nvidia driver or running your processor with only one core.

Re: Freezes, Freezes and Freezes

I can't go back to the 96xx drivers, cause they don't support the 8600GTS.
using the nv driver is also not anoption, cause then the fan is running always @100%
using nosmp? hmm why did I bought a core2duo then?
So..there seems to be only one alternative...and thats the one I really don't wanna use.

Exactly. It's rubbish that those seem to be the only options.

On another note, though, I started running kwin again today, but without running superkaramba, which spiked both cores to 100% yesterday, and I haven't frozen so far.

Re: Freezes, Freezes and Freezes

I have the same problem. If I leave the pc unattended, I found it freezed. Some times I need to reboot with reset, other times if I click here and there trying to make something work, the desktop "unfreeze" and I have all things I did during the freeze happening all together.
I use kde with latest nvidia drivers. I have not problems with multicore processor because I have a monocore athlon64
