Problem with trash bin in Gnome

Hi,

Basically i have a problem, which is described here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=407757

If i delete files on any partition other than root partition, files go to .Trash-$USER folder on that partition, yet
Gnome trash bin stays empty, so in case i want to empty my trash folders, i need to manually go there and delete files.

Any solution/workaround for this?

I understand i can use a simple bash script to just rm -rf all .Trash folders, but i am looking for something more elegant.

Thanks, Eugene

Re: Problem with trash bin in Gnome

AFAIK this is only a problem for the panel applet. The obvious solution is to write and submit a patch to the devs/file a bug report at bugs.gnome.org.

The workaround would be using the desktop icon for the trash (you can turn it on with gconf-editor).

Re: Problem with trash bin in Gnome

The problem applies to both desktop icon and panel applet, unfortunately.

Re: Problem with trash bin in Gnome

strange. The deleted files from my custom partitions, being either soft mounted in /media or hard mounted via fstab, always showed up in the trash can on my desktop. Let me fire gnome up to see if I can reproduce your problem...

[edit]
appears both the desktop icon and the panel applet work as expected, so it is most likely a misconfiguration on your side.
Do you have write permissions on the root of your partitions you delete files on, as .Trash-yourusername has to be created there ?

Re: Problem with trash bin in Gnome

Yes, as a user i can manipulate files on these partitions.
"/dev/sda5 /mnt/sda5 ntfs-3g defaults,user,exec,uid=1000,gid=100 0 0"
This is the entry in fstab for one of them, tell me if you see any problem there.
'exec' parameter is for wine, otherwise many programs refuse to run (Arch x86-64).
As soon as i delete some files, .Trash-$USER folder is created and the files are placed there, but trash bin stays empty.
Usually google helps in solving any problem, but after going through many forums, i've yet to see a solution.

Re: Problem with trash bin in Gnome

m...

To pressh,
I guess what "darkarchon" trying to say is:
"the deleted files" have been actually moved into "different directories"!
And I guess that you may not tell the difference inside a gnome file manager, like: nautilus.

To darkarchon,
I can NOT be sure if this is the case, cause I am not using gnome, but I do have the same experience with XFCE.

The thrash mechanism in XFCE is compliant to the Trash specification by freedesktop.org.
As the Trash specification states that:
the implementation (of the specification) can decide not to move the files (to be deleted) to the standard trash directory,
if they are in DIFFERENT devices.

There are some reasons for this, for example:
1. performance
2. if you un-plug your flash drive and plug it into another host, wouldn't it be strange if you can not undelete the files?

Anyway,
I have no idea about any other elegant way to empty trash.

ps. I have made a bash script to always move files into the standard trash directory:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38712

Hope this helps.

Re: Problem with trash bin in Gnome

OK, thanks for the help and suggestions.
Maybe one day this issue will automagically fix itself or I will come across a solution.
Everything else works great, i can even edit phone book on my cellphone via Wammu, which is awesome wink
