The best clock= value?

Powertop consistently shows "extra timer interrupt" to cause ~50% of wakeups if I have X, DRI and several apps running and ~95% of wakeups if I am just in the console using no apps.  Most cases of this on the web are from people who have not managed to get HPET working... they need a kernel patch or 2.6.24-rc2 with the hpet=force parameter.

My laptop is a few months too old to have HPET hardware, so I need to use one of the older clocks.  I know a few values that the clock kernel parameter can have.  Right now it's set to pit, it can also be unix, rtc (or hpet).  All of these seem to have similar results in powertop.  Would someone care to recommend one of those if it has clear advantages over the others, or tell me if there are some that I've missed?  Thanks.

Great things come in tar.xz packages.
