Arch running unstable

Hi everyone
I need some help. I'm a total newbie to arch and Linux in genereal. I managed to install and configure Arch so it is compareable to windows. The hardware seems to work as it should. I'm using KDE as graphic user interface. But I have one problem: Every once in a while Arch just freezes up and si not reacting to anything and the only thing I can do is pressing the reset button. As you can imagine that is quite annoying. Anyone have an idea?

Here soem details of my PC:
~145 GB Windows Partition
~104 GB Arch Partition
~    1 GB SWAP Partition

AMD Turion 5200+

2 GB RAM
http://leo.dict.org/
Nvidia GeForce 8600GT

If you need more information just say.

Re: Arch running unstable

this might be caused by the bug in the nvidia drivers:
bug is fixed in the latest beta
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … 6&t=102509

Fixed stability problems with some GeForce 8 series GPUs.

of course it might be something else.
one place to check would be
/var/log/messages.log

32-bit nvidia beta driver
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_disp … 69.04.html
64-bit nvidia beta driver
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_disp … 69.04.html

Re: Arch running unstable

I've had similar freezes happen when running compiz-fusion, though it behaves itself using the standard kde window manager. You didn't say anything about compiz, but I figured I'd throw that out as a possible issue as well.

I have a 8600 GT and my arch install is stable. I do not use kde though.

Re: Arch running unstable

Next time it locks up, try hitting CTRL + ALT + F1  to go to a console.  That was you will be able to see if the whole system is frozen, or just Xorg (which i would possibly anticipate if it's video driver related).

You can hit CTRL + ALT + F7 to return to your kde.  This may not be that helpful, but it seems worth a shot.

Re: Arch running unstable

I have had the same problem: pc freezed when not used. When I start to use it again I can only move the mouse pointer. It stars to work again after a minute or more. I switched of compiz-fusion and Ihave no more freeze...apparently,...
