I really hate this... I have

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

sound controller on my laptop. The sound is worse as ever.. It started scratching after the latest kernel upgrade and I can't even listen to music or watch a film now... I tried setting PCM to lower levels like %80 %50 but it didn't get solved.... I'm really pissed of because of these kinds of errors..

try kernel from testing it includes alsa updates

welcome to the famous snd_hda bugs in alsa
your modprobe.conf is clean i guess?
you need to try parameters on this modules sometimes to get the correct output.
bios and chipset are not harmonizing all the time

Try module parameters, as already mentioned. See /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt and my guide. Hint: modinfo.

I tried most of the settings in there and nothing changed... Setting PCM level to %50 works for now... Then I just play with master volume level... It's somehow annoying since it seems as a dirty, stupid workaround but at least it works..

I had a similar issue some time back wich my hda soundchip.

please check that digital output is disabled. when digital was enabled, the sound was all scratchy and clickety
also try to disable input and their corresponding outputs (e.g mute microphone output AND disable it as an input), as there may be some static in the laptop case looping back in.

i had hda sound with ich7 and im experiencing this scratchy sound on my left channel only. the right channel is clean as can be.

I still have these problems.. disabling some channels etc.. doesn't work
