For some reason, any time that I put more than 512 mb of memory into my computer (32 bit processor), I get a kernel panic. Is there any software/kernel-based reason for this or is it what I'm suspecting -- a burned-out processor? I had some problems with overheating the other week around the same time that I installed the extra memory. I cleaned all of the dust out of the fan (which I believe is the reason for the overheating) and I stopped getting cpu temperature threshold warnings.

it sounds like the modules/chips aren't fully compatible

That's a good guess, but I have a feeling that isn't the problem... My system has been working fine for quite a while. It only kernel panics when I add the extra memory. All four sticks are the same. The machine has previously worked with all 2 gb of memory.......
Well hey.. I've noticed that some other people are having cpu soft lockup problems, which did occur as part of the panic. Maybe now that I've upgraded to 2.6.23.9-1, it will work better. I'll give it another try today.
