Hello,
I'm having a problem loading Arch. The loading stops while loading the modules and I get get a bug:
BUG: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 7c8b1738
I used the "Don't Panic"-Installer.
Here's my pastebin for more details:
http://pastebin.archlinux.org/20334
Actually I also had a lot of problems with the installation. It wouldn't work until I manually issued the commands mkswap and swapon.
http://pastebin.archlinux.org/20297
I don't know if the loading-problem is derived from the installation-problem, and therefore don't know if this is posted in the right place.
Specs:
Ibm thinkpad x31
Intel Pentium M 1.6 gHz
512 MB
ATI Mobility
I'm coming straight from Ubuntu, so I'm not really a hardcore Linux-user, but I'm learning and hope to be able to have a full-working installation of Arch up and going soon.
Kind regards,
Daniel

I saw the "out of memory" messages -> try the lowmem boot image on the CD.

Shouldn't 512 MB be sufficient? The "out of memory"-messages also didn't appear when I issued the commands "mkswap" and "swapon".
Thanks for answering

Perhaps try a newer iso? ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/rc-iso/2007.11/

I reinstalled Arch(Base-packs only), but I still get the message: "BUG: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address xxxxxxxx". The number changes each time.
I was actually able to load Arch successfully one time, and log in as root. Then I changed the locale in rc.conf, uncommentet in locale.gen and rebootet. And there it was again. I tried to change the values back to what they were before I changed them via PXE, but it still wouldn't work. I then tried to reinstall, but I still get the same message. Allthough, the installer-program runs without errors and I don't have to issue mkswap- and swapon-commands manuallly now. At least the installprosess seems to work now
Oh, and by the way... Kubuntu and XP runs without issues on my pc.

I was able to log in again now, allthough the successrate is only about 2 of 10 times.

Hi all!
I've similar problem:
Last kernel which runs ok is 2.6.23.1-6, same problem was with 2.6.23.8-1, today I've tried 2.6.23.9-1 and I got same message while booting Arch. What's wrong with it?? I've been using Arch since Wombat release and don't remember if I had so many problems with kernel upgrade.
Because of this bug I can't perform full system upgrade since November...
My hardware is: Athlon XP 2400@2200MHz, 1GB dual channel memory.
Any ideas what to do with it??

My problem resolved itselft when I installed a Desktop Environment. Arch boots up fine now.

I don't think that installation of any desktop environment should solve this problem. In my opinion the problem is with kernel26 package...

I also find it unlikely to have anything to do with desktop environments. Still, it's working here now and all I did was the steps described in the wiki that follows the installation of Arch and installing Fluxbox.
I did perform a system upgrade if you think that is a possible solution.

I think that I'd found the reason why I got problems with kernel. It was because of wifi card rt2400 CVS drivers which I'm using. I've compiled and installed CVS-daily version of those drivers and after upgrading to the latest kernel everything goes ok...
