In Kde, digiKam rules. And it is fancy, but not annoying in any way. It can do some basic image editing and have good features for managing your collection. Highly recommended. Even my wife likes it.

Digikam is a "must have" for me. It really is a great app

If the camera has a "mass storage" mode, you won't need any special program to get the photos on to your computer: you can mount it as an external drive and just copy them over. Most do, nowadays, I think.
Digikam's still excellent for keeping track of your photos with tags and thumbnails though, and there's always the GIMP for editing, too.

My EOS 400D does NOT and it is quite a new camera. I can only connect to it through PTP. But I can absolutely recommendt digikam for this job, too, as it also manages all you pictures and so on. It's quite a nice tool!

Assuming your camera has SD cards, get an adapter to allow connection the USB for the transfer to the computer rather than running the camera battery down. Also applies to compact disc devices.

I always copy files with bash (command line) and then browse/rotate/delete them in gqview. It's much faster than digikam. I am still searching for good photo browser...

I have an x86_64 system and was wondering if anyone else has been having problems getting the 'Batch' conversion utilities to work properly for them. Every time I try to invoke one I get 'Unable to properly run 'convert' program from package 'ImageMagick' ' (or something very close to that). I do have all the packages installed and can use the 'convert' program myself (and do, as I am forced to). I've messed with PATHs, links, and tried running digikam from a shell window to see what exactly the problem is, but can't get enough information to troubleshoot it further.
Has anyone else had the same problem?
Thanks!
