Kernel 2.6.23.9-1 Stutter [Solved]

Hi, Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing any stutter when running games in wine with the new kernel? I am also getting "I/O Stutter" when the HDD is doing anything intensive.
Everything is fine with 2.6.23.8, however I notice .9 has the v24 CFS patch, Im guessing the problem is related to the scheduler. I would question the wisdom behind updating the scheduler since any bugs are fixed in the kernel patches (right?), the ones in MM's site just add new features/bugs, however I don't know the reason behind the decision to use it.
Back to a custom kernel in the mean time I guess.

I'm experiencing the same problem when playing WoW using wine.

Re: Kernel 2.6.23.9-1 Stutter [Solved]

Issue is solved by grabbing the abs build for the 2.6.23.9 kernel and removing the v24 CFS update from the compile.

I've got the same problem here... I grabbed the last kernel (2.6.23.12-3) and I tried to modify the PKGBUILD to remove the v24 CFS patch, recompiled without any problem. The only thing now is when wine starts and after a few seconds, the whole system does not respond anymore. Same thing happens with winecfg. I can still ssh in but X server is unkillable (even with -9).

I reverted back to official 2.6.23.12-3. Anybody had any better luck resolving this issue?

Thanks

I've tested this again with kernel 2.6.23.14-1 and this issue seems to be gone for me smile

Re: Kernel 2.6.23.9-1 Stutter [Solved]

Problem is definitely not [Solved] for me yet. Having the problem with WoW as I described in detail here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=42779. I am using kernel 2.6.23.14-1 and went through the process of recompiling the kernel using the original PKGBUILD, commenting the CFS patching line. I now have the same problem as nico1818 mentioned previously. System becomes unresponsive. Anybody has any clue on how to solve this one? Thanks in advance.

Re: Kernel 2.6.23.9-1 Stutter [Solved]

I don't get something here. The patch is there for a reason, no? Maybe this patch is there to resolve the issue of a system becoming unresponsive... Or maybe this patch is necessary for another patch to work correctly, otherwise resulting in ... an unresponsive system?

I'm not at home in kernel compiling and am quite new to linux, but I know that compiling a custom kernel *can* have nasty side-effects, unrelated to the distro you're using. Before commenting out any options or patches, you should know exactly what the patch is meant to do and everything the patch is connected to.

Zl.

Re: Kernel 2.6.23.9-1 Stutter [Solved]

I have the same problem. I use kernel version 2.6.24. Will it help to solve problme if I compile vanilla kernel from kernel.org without any patches?

Sorry for my bad English. smile

Did anyone of you try to start the game with "nice -19"? Did that fix it?
