Dimming The Light is Weird

Hey There,

My new HP laptop supports dimming screen light options in GNOME but the applet in GNOME acts strange. I change the scrollbar but the power of the light doesn't change according to the level of that scrollbar.

I want the computer the dim its lights when laptop works on battery power. When I plug in the AC power, it should be brighter. But this doesn't work as it's expected. I dim the light upto 50% when it works with battery power. But it change the power of the light randomly despite it's still working on battery power.

Any comments or suggestions, please ?

I have a Dell Latitude 131l, im experiencing the exactly same problem, still haven't found the answer. When i use the hotkeys the brigth applet shows up, but i cant change anything at all.

I configured acpid to do what you are talking about without GNOME. You could investigate that.

Also, make sure the video module is loaded before trying to modify backlight brightness.

Maybe you can explain a bit more on how to do that?
It seems people still have problems coping with their brightness/backlight. It is good to have this topics solved.

Well I've found something.. gnome power applet doesn't work that much right but it seems to dim the lights.. but it only sets the values of AC power settings.. it doesn't do anything for battery power settings.. generally if i do something in ac power settings, it'll work.. most of the options in battery power settings don't work..

to make everyone understand the problem, i'm going to record a video soon to make it clear..

Try xbacklight in the terminal, look up the man page and try using it. It might give you a hint. However, xbacklight doesn't work for me, so I can't help you more than that.

You can think that I want too much but I want Arch and GNOME to work perfectly for the end-users like plug&play.. That's why I've opened this thread.. GNOME has builtin apps for this purpose so why use xbacklight ? I know, you're trying to give me a solution but I think we should do what Ubuntu does a little bit.. Or at least we can notify the developers about these for a more perfect DE..
