How to link a *.doc to abiword or open office?

When I try to open a MS word-document in firefox, I get this message
you have chosen to open *.doc which is a doc file What should Bon Echo do with this file? Open with ..."

Where can I find the open office or abiword programm, which I can link to *.doc?

Regards

mumpf

Re: How to link a *.doc to abiword or open office?

Ok I tried to adjust content ->file types -> doc -> manage

The first menu-field is "Open them with this default application", but the field is empty. I selected default-application.
" ... could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.
Which preference?

The second possibility is: "Open them with this application"

Where would I find the abiword-application (open-office would be ok too)?

Sorry about that. I forgot about the way that menu works.

The easiest was to do what you want is when you click on a .doc file, choose the 'Open with' option as well as the 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on'. After that you can edit the type the way I said before.

Re: How to link a *.doc to abiword or open office?

I manage to open *.doc files in thunar automatically with abiword or open-office (in thunar you would find an icon and the name to select), but I have to select the path in firefox: in /usr/bin there is abiword and AbiWord-2, but I don't find anything specific to open-office writer.

Re: How to link a *.doc to abiword or open office?

in firefox you need a plugin/addon called mime edit... This addon will let you edit the mime types for firefox. You can find it at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4498

For thunderbird go here.. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4498

Re: How to link a *.doc to abiword or open office?

I haven't tried the mime addon. These are my steps in xfce4, which work:

1) Thunar (the explorer of xfce) Link doc with the abiword icon
Search a *.doc -> right click this *.doc file  -> open with  -> other application  -> select abiword (or Open Office Writer)
2) Firefox
Edit -> preferences  -> file types  -> manage -> doc file  -> Open them with this application  -> /usr/bin/abiword (or /usr/bin/soffice)

Edit: I have added your hints in the wiki, it's my first wiki-"article", hope that's ok  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fir … pen_office

I have added the mime addon link is at the very end of the page

Edit:
I should have read the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Makepkg; some packages were not installed yet, sorry
