I have this dilemma. Why does mplayer force me to install samba when I don't use samba? It would be good if I could force install mplayer without samba.

samba or smbclient, I don't remember, is mplayer dependency (for being able to play files over the network, I think). You can recompile mplayer without samba support, I guess, if you really want to get rid of it.

I did that, make my own mplayer PKGBUILD, for these reasons.
I have been meaning to ask for ages, what is necessary for -vf screenshot? even with --enable-{png,jpeg,xv} it doesn't have it.
Edit:
options I have disabled:
ftp pvr tv-teletext tv-v4l2 tv-v4l1 tv cddb cdparanoia
libdvdcss-internal dvdread dvdread-internal dvb smb network
speex tremor-internal openal jack esd v4l2 v4l2 fbdev aa
vidix-internal vidix-external dga1 dga2 md5sum tga ladspa
dvb dvbhead lirc lircc pnm
options I have enabled:
x11 gl largefiles mmx mmxext 3dnow 3dnowext sse sse2 xv sdl jpeg png

Well, this is odd. I was about to write my question to the mplayer mailing list, but that makes you just double check what you're doing.
What I had done before was change the ./configure flags in the pkgbuild, then run makepkg -f. Then pkg/usr/bin/mplayer -vf help | grep screenshot. I did it several times in a row (with different enables), so I guess the information wasn't accurate due to me not deleting past results (pkg/src dir) (I have no idea though)
So this time I deleted everything except the mplayer source archive, and even moved sdl from the enabled to disabled list, and makepkg'd and -U'd from there. And I got -vf screenshot now! Yay
