Is it safe to delete /media if its not being used?

All my drives/devices are set to mount in /mnt. Nothing uses /media. Is it safe to delete the directory or could this potentially break some software/things?

p.s  I'm not really a newbie but I couldn't think of anywhere else to post this tongue

HAL uses the /media directory, so if you use HAL to mount devices automatically, then you need it.
