I dunno each time I have a problem I do not find an appropriate pla to post the message.
So going back to the question.
My cups does not print anymore, before somebody say "hey idiot did yop plug the cable?" here is the situation
I use latest version of cups, foomati-*, ghostscript, gimp-print under kernel 2.6.6
The printer is a Epson 5700 and was working correctly untill I dunno 7/10 days ago. I do not use it all the day so I cant be more precise.
The cable is plugged the printer is on and it works fine. I tested 10 minutes ago under knopix with kernel 2.6.6 and under a Mandrake live CD.
I realy suspect that one of the above package has a problem and I think is ghostscript.
Here we go with the test I have done:
1) I tried under kernel 2.4
2) I downgraded the kernel to 2.6.3
3) I downgraded all the other package to release version
As you can see from the process gs keep on running
1568 ? 00:00:00 cupsd
1742 ? 00:00:00 foomatic-rip
1743 ? 00:00:00 parallel
1745 ? 00:00:00 foomatic-rip
1746 ? 00:00:00 foomatic-rip
1747 ? 00:00:00 sh
1748 ? 00:05:59 gs
1750 ? 00:00:00 sh
1751 ? 00:00:00 cat
1752 ? 00:00:00 hpijs
But no way the printer does not print.
From the cups log seem everything ok, even at debug2 level.
As you can see everithing starts (gs, filter etc. etc.) but gs seem to hangs waithing for something or better processing someting as you ca se fro top result
1748 daemon 19 0 9132 9128 3848 R 90.5 7.4 9:04.95 gs
I want to know if somebody else have similar problem

Another interesting particular is that as soon as I kill gs the printer goes in error. So the connection works properly, I think is a gs problem.
But I tested it with a generic postscript file and works.

did you restart the cups daemon after upgrading? alot of daemon monitored function usually require a restart of the daemon after upgrade.
did you check that your setings were still intact (ie printcap, settings on the cups administation page etc.
i reinstalled arch recently and i had no issues with cups. (can't say the sme for transcode/xvidcore/avifile)

Yes I tied several test, as I wrote I tried to downgrade the software as well restarted the wole system many time tring doing different test uder different kernel.
I am almost sure it is a gs problem, as I wrote it keep on running getting almost all the cpu time.
For sure it is not an hardware problem, the computer printed correctly under other live distribution, I made a test also with another usb printer with the same result, gs keep on running using almost all the cpu time.

Since you didn't mention it, I'd thought I'd ask. You did configure cups with localhost:631 in your browser right? Did the test print come out correctly? What was the error message?

I think is pretty clear that the cups does not give any error, (the part where I speak about cups log), simply it say that the job is processing.
the whole procedure hang at gs elaborating the document suking my cpu time.

so recompile gs maybe? sometimes things just won't work unless you recompile them. other than that maybe file a bug too.

Yes I think I am going to rebuild gs.
But unfortunatly I think I can't fill a bug entry, I do not have any element at this moment.
As soon as I find a solution I'll post a message.
