KDE 4.0 consumes 40% less memory!

http://translate.google.com/translate?h … %26hs%3Drd

Interesting to say the least.  Nice to see added features and optimizations both improving when compared to some others... *COUGH* Vista, Leopard   I'm highly anticipating the release.  big_smile:D

Unfortunately it's not true, or else, it's true when using ksysguard. In the second test made by Korneliusz using exmap, results are a little bit different.

Good to see that - I am very much looking forward to kde4. Too happy with xfce right now to want to try out the RC, but definitely downloading as soon as it hits the repositories.

Re: KDE 4.0 consumes 40% less memory!

Although i have no problems with the idea of kde4 consuming less memory than kde3, doing benchmarks on a development version, and comparing with a stable product is a bad idea.
Nice indicator, but it could still be very far from the truth i'm afraid.

Those two tests should be taken as curiosity rather than real comparison. But testing development version also can point to some introductory notices, and maybe this was goal of author.

Re: KDE 4.0 consumes 40% less memory!

I agree about the development version not being the best test, so the accuracy can be taken with a grain of salt.

@ Marb, I do see that he found different results with different software.  I'd personally like to see what 'top' reports.  But anyways, he does still show improvement on both tests.

Slashdot update: 12/14 22:40 GMT:

The author of the original KDE 3.5 vs KDE 4.0 memory comparison has come out with a more accurate benchmark. In reality, KDE 4.0 uses 110 MB more memory than KDE 3.5.8.

Re: KDE 4.0 consumes 40% less memory!

Seriously, until kde has hit 4.0, or 4.1 for that matter, this means nothing.
Why? because there are a lot of unoptimized code, memory leaks, missing pieces, and debug symbols and whatnot in a development version.

The end result might consume +/- 500 MB more/less for all we know now.
Lets leave the educated guesses to the trolls for now, shall we? wink

Indeed. KDE4 seems nice, too bad it's not stable for use yet! I'd call the latest release an early beta, not a RC.
