screen: Cannot find terminfo entry for 'rxvt-unicode', works in root

I'm using screen (http://www.archlinux.org/packages/14519/) and it works fine under root, but it keeps saying it can't find the terminfo entry for anything when I'm under a different user ('linux', 'xterm', 'rxvt-unicode'). First I tried setting URxvt*termName: rxvt (xterm as well), then I tried copying screenrc from /etc/ and /etc/skel/ to my home directory as .screenrc, and finally I tried compiling from source as another user. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

urxvt*termName:     xterm-color

That's what i use. Hope it works for you.

Add this:

export TERM=xterm-xfree86

to .bashrc

Oh god oh god!

All of this advice is bad bad bad. I don't know why the linux community started thinking that lying about your terminal capabilities was a good thing. If you're using rxvt-unicode, you're NOT using xterm-color or xterm-xfree86. These are different terminal standards. Bad bad bad.

If you're using rxvt-unicode, you're using rxvt-unicode. Period. Never set TERM manually, always let the terminal do it.

That said, your problem is a missing terminfo file. This is just a little text file. Do the following for me:

ls /usr/share/terminfo/r/rxvt*
ls ~/.terminfo/r/*

As both root and a user

Re: screen: Cannot find terminfo entry for 'rxvt-unicode', works in root

Didn't work japetto ;\

phrakture, rxvt-unicode and several others are in /usr/share/terminfo/r/ while in root and as another user. However, I don't have a ~/.terminfo folder under root or as another user. Also, I just reinstalled arch (I went from x64 to i686) and I still have the same problem, in fact it was the first thing I checked after I reinstalled (I installed screen right after getting my wireless working).

Thanks for the help guys smile

Are you ssh'ing to another machine? This error typically happens when you ssh to a machine that does NOT have the terminfo installed.

Could you possibly post your screenrc, just so I can check?

Nope, I've installed arch on my laptop.

I don't know if terminfo is the correct name of the package, but pacman -Qs *term* or *info* or terminfo didn't show anything.

This is the config I've copied from /etc/skel/ to ~/, if I type nano .screenrc after logging in this is what I'll see.

Edit: I forgot to say that screen produces the same results in xterm.
