I have firestarter as the last daemon in the DAEMONS array in rc.conf. When the init starts, all daemons are loaded except firestarter... it just says [FAIL] with no explanation. If I run /etc/rc.d/firestarter start immediately after that is changes to [DONE] and starts perfectly. I would like to know a possible cause for this, I can't figure out one.
Also when I startx, xfce starts and I have gksu firestarter in my list of autostarted applications. If I startx before running /etc/rc.d/firestarter start, the firestarter GUI will start and not give any problems. Does that mean that it brought up the daemon automatically? I don't see how it's possible to have firestarter working in the GUI without the daemon running.
So I guess this is just a weird quirk as long as I start X most of the time and an annoyance of having to start firestarter manually, those few times that I use the console alone.

Great things come in tar.xz packages.

maybe a depency of firestarter is not loaded at boot time.
try setting firestarter to be the last daemon and to disable background daemon loading

I already made firestarter the last daemon and if by "disable background daemon loading" you mean make sure no daemons are prefixed by an @ symbol, then I've done that too.
One thing I should add... firestarter DOES work at boot time only if the previous shut down failed and I had to press the power button (because of a bug in r128 DRI). If the previous shut down went well, firestarter does this weird thing that requires two tries.

Also try this method http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=542756
I just installed firestarter on arch and used that method when I used it on ubuntu gutsy. First ill check whether if mine fails to start as well before applying that method.
