I'm sure this is the announcement many of you have been waiting for. After much discussion about legal issues at hand, some voting, we are ready to announce the glorious victor of the logo competition.
Drumroll please!
The winner is Thayer Williams' Archer logo, available for your viewing pleasure in submission form here:
http://dev.archlinux.org/~travis/logo-c … archer.png
It will be some time before we are able to integrate the new logo into our website and existing artwork, so please be patient with us while we do this transition.
Congratulations Thayer, and many thanks to all those who participated; voting took two weeks, and during that time it seemed like many of the entries could have taken the lead. The submissions were full of some very awesome artwork - who knew we had such artistic talent in the community?
Thayer, please contact Aaron and Travis via email to discuss how we should move forward.

Big news
Congrats Thayer! And thanks to all those who participated and submitted their ideas and concepts! I think it's fair to say that regardless of whose logo idea it was that got selected in the end, all of the people who submitted their concepts, participated in the discussions and were willing to share their ideas and/or provide feedback deserve credit and recognition here -- so good job guys!!!

Very, very nice. Big congrats!!

Congrats Thayer! Your logo was one of my favorites too. It represents Arch's beauty perfectly - bleeding edge, sharp, sometimes cranky - but that's why we love it

great choice, great logo!!!

Would have been my first choice as well!

I like how it kind of looks like there's a user's "head and shoulders" in the bottom of the arch. the "gnome" foot arch is kind of cool too.
bonus: it also works if the name changes to "arrowhead linux."

the extras d.e.'s logos are very classy.
congrats thayer, now we expect the christmas version:
if you make the logo dark-green and put some balls here and there, it would be perfect

Congrats from me, too! It wasn't really my favourite - but with a little bit of time, we will all get accustomed to it !

Hi Thayer,
Congratulations! you beated the hell out of the others. Now, can you be so kind as to send me an 1680x1050 Wallpaper? I want to be the first to theme my desktop with your logo. 8) Ohh, and if not, then this won't make it to the newsletter.
Seriously, congrats. Now lets update cafepress.

This logo was my first choice too.

I am really impressed with the logo. I'm hoping we'll soon have access to svg's so that I can suitably brand my desktop.
Excellent work, Thayer...Fantastic!

*shock* Did I read that right? Is that my name up there at the top??? I don't really know what to say...thank you doesn't seem nearly enough.
There were so many good designs that I wanted to vote for myself! I didn't think I stood a chance among the many truly fantastic submissions and I am honoured to be chosen among such a talented group of individuals. I couldn't ask for a better Christmas present and I sincerely thank everyone for their passionate participation both before and after this contest became a reality. I'd also like to give special mention to my wife, Libby who inspires everything I do. Thank you!
Cheers and have a very Merry Christmas!

I guess I'm the only one who is disappointed by the winning entry. For personal reasons I think the Thayer Williams' Archer logo is way too much similar to the Alcan logo.
Where I live in Chicoutimi, QC, this company is know by most for increasing our economics. More intelligent people though, recognize the harm they did by sadly polluting our natural lands and ruined our great Saguenay river.
I might just not buy any upcoming merch. Arch still remains my one and only distro.

Congratulations thayer. That tag line is what convinced me of this one and how good it still looks at 16px.

Congrats, thayer.
However, I am a little disappointed in the selection. I love the quality of the logo, but I can't help but see a breast and nipple staring at me from the bottom of the logo.
<as the flames start>as if you weren't thinking it too (if you weren't you are now).
I should have expressed this opinion earlier, but I didn't think this logo would win.

Gongrats thayer! I've used your logo in my previous desktop screenies and now im hoping to be the first to render it

Congratulations, Thayer! It's fitting that one of the instigators and biggest promoters of this whole new logo project should be the winner. While it wouldn't have been my first choice either (like uhsf - and as I've said before - I'm slightly troubled by its similarity to the Alcan logo), I can't complain about it being chosen over mine: it's a distinctive, well-executed and adaptable design that will give Arch an excellent new public face.

@ uhsf : I hardly can see how alcan is too much like the archer. I don't know maybe if you stare at one of them for like an hour or more and then look at the other you can see the resemblance.
@ tankmcp : Yay! Arch is a woman! Didn't you knew the old logo was the whole deal and not just the tip? Just guess what the black arch is.
@ Thayer, so can I get my 1680x1050 wallpaper?
EDIT: OMG, how can this ressemble the alcan logo? there's not a single similarity.

Congratulations Thayer! That's great.
I have to say that I really enjoyed the threads surrounding this contest. They certainly brought out the strangeness of Arch's artist community!

See my previous post regarding my inspiration... JK
Seriously though, I guess I could see what you mean in an abstract, "hey, that flagpole looks like a wang kinda way, but really I just don't make that association when I look at it (nor flagpoles either!)

Sorry, kensai I haven't spoken with Aaron or Travis yet, but I'll make sure you're at the top of the list! In the meantime, there is a 6-pack of 1680x1050 wallpapers available here: http://www.cinderwick.ca/archer/ (just scroll down toward the bottom)

I'll say it too: congratulations! I'm still hesitating between finding that the strong semantic elements are one of its top qualities or just corny Good work. Hopefully you'll soon get a contract to re-design a certain website...
