PAM error linked to kernel update?

I updated to "xorg-server 1.4.0.90-3" and "kernel26 2.6.23.12-3" last night and rebooted. After the reboot, I was taken to my usual KDM screen.

I tried to login using my username and password but it came up saying something like "KDE has encountered a critical error. Check your logs.". So I switched to a new terminal screen on tty2 and it prompted me for a login. I typed "root" and it came back saying "Critical Error: PAM Failure" or something along those lines.

user@live-cd:~$ sudo chroot /media/arch
bash-3.2#
bash-3.2# sudo pacman -Syu
sudo: unable to initialize PAM: No such file or directory
:: Synchronizing package databases...
...

So did the kernel update affect PAM or something? and how can I fix this?

Thanks

Re: PAM error linked to kernel update?

Odd, while in chroot and when I ran that pacman update ... it seems to have asked me to upgrade again, and heres the output.
