Okay, heres yet another question from me. I just got a Ipod nano for christmas so of course I wanted to try it out. I hooked it up to a windows computer and wrote the system info and everthing. Then I took it over to my linux computer and started up gtkpod. It imediatly popped up asking what model it was, but there is no option for the new ipods so I just selected the old 4gb nano and loaded some songs. It showed having 2.6 gb free after I was done, so I unplugged it ( I have it set to auto umount after 2 seconds of non-use ) and the ipod showed as having 2.6 free, but when I went to music there was nothing there. But the music is on there its just not recognizing it. I did notice when I plugged it into windows itunes it formatted it windows. So how can I get my music recognized on my ipod? and is gtkpod the best choice at this point?

You're going to want to decide if you want iTunes or not at this point. When you think you uploaded songs onto your iPod with gtkPod, you probably forgot to hit "Save Changes".
If you format and setup your iPod with iTunes, you'll need to use iTunes from that point on, which isn't available natively for linux.
I would personally recommend wiping the iPod with gtkpod and starting all over from scratch. I personally liked iTunes a lot to be honest, I liked the sync'ing concept and how it was executed. But I have since switched to gtkPod after removing windows entirely from my machine.
If you're primarily a linux user, go with gtkPod. If your primary machine is a macintosh or windows box, I'd go with itunes.

Well I am definatly staying away from itunes. At this point I am considering using exaile or rhythmbox instead. How do I define my ipod in fstab and set it up to auto mount? and how exactly do I wipe and reformat my ipod under whichever program?

Don't select an old ipod, thats why your iPod doesnt see the music. New iPods are apparently supported in libgpod 0.6... which hasnt hit our repos yet -- you can upgrade with ABS in the meantime.

Okay, So if I werent using gtkpod. how do I (a) get it to mount automaticly when its plugged in? and (b) Format it so it can actually recognize what gets put on it.
this will preferably be in exaile. gtkpod as a last resort.

That didn't help very much at all. Let me restate what I have and what I need. Maybe I'm not being clear in what I'm asking.
I have:
1. This line in fstab
## Ipod
/dev/sdb1 /media/ipod vfat rw,user 0 0
So every time I have to use the ipod I type mount /media/ipod
2. libgpod .6.0 and gtkpod from abs for support for the new ipods.
I need:
1. To know how to either have the ipod automount when its plugged in, or when gtkpod is started.
2. To know why I can load files onto the ipod but not have them show up as songs.
I select the songs hit load to ipod. I can see them in the left pane. I click save changes, it looks like its loading them all then it comes up with the error "Couldn't find the iPod firewire ID".
I umount. (it never says on the screen it is okay to disconnect, but its not mounted so I just unplug it. Is this bad? )check the ipod and it shows disk space being used, but no songs. I hope that made more clear what I am trying to figure out. Thank you for your effort so far.

Err...am I missing something? Do you mean from ABS or from AUR? i have installed both gtkpod and libgpod from the AUR and i still can't transfer music it's a classic 80gb ipod
Offline
I installed both from ABS. I had to change a PKGBUILD for libgpod to the new version. I can't transfer music either.

Ok, I got it working. The name of the thread is ipod Nano, but here is what you have to do for the iPod Classic (it should also work for Nano, just try it):
The 2nd method requires more manual intervention. First, you need to get your
firewire id manually. To do that, run "sudo lsusb -v | grep -i Serial" (without
the "") with your iPod plugged in, this should print a 16 character long string
like 00A1234567891231. Once you have that number, create/edit
/mnt/ipod/iPod_Control/Device/SysInfo (if your iPod is mounted at /mnt/ipod).
Add to that file the line below:
FirewireGuid: 0xffffffffffffffff
(replace ffffffffffffffff with the string you obtained at the previous step)
Save that file, and you should be all set. Be careful when using apps which
lets you manually specify which iPod model you own, they may overwrite that
file when you do that. So if after doing that libgpod still seems to write
invalid content to the iPod, double-check the content of that SysInfo file to
make sure the FirewireGuid line you added isn't gone. If that happens, readd it
to the end of the file, and make sure libgpod rewrite the iPod content.Restart Amarok or whatever your audio program is.

Don't forget to set your correct iPod model in amaroK or gtkpod.
Cheers.

Awesome! that worked thank you!!
now I just have to figure out automounting and cover art and I'll be set!
Offline
You're welcome
I don't know about Exaile, but Amarok handles cover art fine, as long as you have it in your collection. It should be automatic.
I also have to manually mount and eject my iPod though

I am using GTKpod... I am experimenting with it but so far it seems finnicky at best.
