I've got a laptop today for Christmas, and I need a bit of help setting it up. Here are it's specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.5Ghz processor
1GB RAM
Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN Network Connection
Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller
How do I set up the wireless? I tried installing the packages and adding the module to my rc.conf, but wlan0 wasn't added. I've heard that there have been problems with Intel sound, and I can see that as I am currently running my Ubuntu 7.10 live cd to post this (it came with no windows ) I hope it's just me doing something stupid...

I got quite a similair laptop. For the wireless, get the correct driver, add waln0="dhcp" in your networking section. Get wicd (I find it to be the easiest), have that load in your daemons. Then to run it type /usr/lib/wicd/tray.py or gui.py. Of course to get all that you have to have a working Ethernet connecting. Graphics is just the Xf86-video-intel.

Mah. I hate to depend on GUI-stuff for networking. I switched to wpa_supplicant for all my networks. It handles WEP and non-encrypted, too! (Read the manuals of it, or you may also ask me to provide you with an example config)
Just put it in some initscript that gets loaded before network or don't depend on network at all, or try doing it the Arch Way . The latter may be the best variant to try - but as I'm rather new to arch and still using my Gentoo/LFS initscripts, I have to point you to the wiki. I believe I saw an entry for wireless networking on startup there.
Guy #1: I'd totally hit that.
Guy #2: Dude, I'd hit that so hard whoever could pull me out would become the King of England.

Finally set up my laptop I've installed KNetworkManager for networking and KDE4. I've enabled the compositor and it's beautiful The only problem I have is that the sound is broken. How do I fix it??

A note on wireless, with my AGN 4965, is that I can *not*, and belive me i've tried other kernels, all versions if iwlwifi/firmware and ndiswrapper, to set it up with traditional iwconfig/ifconfig or the arch wireless methods.
The only thing that works is through networkmanager. It's ususally is the other way around
I have two other linux boxes connected to the same AP, so i know what i'm doing.
About your sound card;
You probably have to pass a parameter to modprobe, when it loads your module.
Try
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
also try toshiba, auto, 3stack, in /etc/modprobe.conf.

Hmm that doesn't seem to have worked. I can see now that the problem is that there is no master. My alsamixer only includes: Headphone, PCM, Front, Front Mic and Front Boos. What has happened. The module seems to have loaded fine...

There were some sound issues with some recent kernel upgrades. They should be fixed in 2.6.23.12-3. Have you upgraded to that version yet?
Edit: I see that you just installed Arch so you probably would have got that version from the mirror anyway.

i'm having the same issue with the inte sound card. it looks like it's the same problem as I don't have master either.

I don't have a master on one of mine, it doesn't seem to be a problem, in an earlier version of Alsa I didn't have PCM either, which was a problem. I just use front as master and everything works fine.

after having one by one gone through all of the different ones and set them to 70% i'm still getting no sound.

I haven't got master either, but my sound is alright. ALC883 - Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
You didn't forget the audio group did you?

Nope, I'm in the audio group. Maybe it's a KDE4 bug?
EDIT: Amarok (1.4.7) isn't working either so it probably isn't a KDE4 bug.
EDIT2: I'm a bit worried about my HD as I've seen things around saying that using the default settings can shortern it's life. How can I prevent this from happening?

Hi I have another problem that (hopefully) can be resolved quite easily. I've got built in bluetooth, and I can't get it to work. I tried looking at the wiki, but it can't seem to detect it
By the way I'm running 64bit.

Yes finally got it working! All I did was add the following to my /etc/modprobe.conf:
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba
I also ran alsaconf as well, which added a few lines to it. Now I need to get the bluetooth working...

I recently bought a new laptop and i have the intel 4965AGN card which has integrated bluetooth, and i'm asking myself if you were able to use your bluetooth in archlinux (i use arch64). I think we use the same bluetooth.
Thank you for your help!!

I haven't been able to set it up unfortunately. It's not really an issue for me...but it would be great if I could get it working.

Thanks! I'll continue trying!

i did it! First install bluez-libs bluez-utils libbtctl and kdebluetooth. After edit /etc/conf.d/bluetooth and edit the #HIDD_ENABLE="false" to HIDD_ENABLE="true".
Later edit rc.conf and add module hci_usb and restart.
If it don't work, try start windows (xp or vista) and enable bluetooth with Fn+F2 (or the key your laptop uses) and restart arch and it'll work!!
Bye
