XFree86: caught signal 11 server aborting...

I had archlinux with xfree86 up and running 1.5 weeks ago, when my HD died...

today I finally reinstalled it, smooth install (only he can't install packages on ext3 partitions created by partition magic ('device is full') - he has to make the filesystem himself, does anybody know why? other distros CAN write to those partitions)

I installed the latest version of xfree (4.2.1-3) and used the exact same config file as I used 1.5 weeks ago, yet he can't start it

when I do startx, the screen 'clicks' and goes black (what he's supposed to do), 'clicks' again and stays black (what he isn't supposed to do)
ctrl+alt+backspace doesn't help, I have to alt+Fx to go back to a console, to see this message:

[snip - nothing that indicates an error in this portion]
Fatal server error:
caught signal 11. Server aborting

the log file doesn't give any severe errors either hmm

does anyone know what's going on?

What type of video card and driver are you running? I can't guarantee this, but try generating a new config using the X system then insert any relevant changes into the old file or use the new file whichever works best.

Re: XFree86: caught signal 11 server aborting...

about that not writing to an ext 3 partition while others can is provably not related to AL, i think that would be kernel related. If you have a Nvidia card try disabling some of these in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file

Section "Module"
# Load "xie"
# Load "pex5"
# Load "glx"
# Load "dri"
        Load "dbe"
        Load "record"
        Load "extmod"
        Load "type1"
EndSection

Should be nvidia, e.g.:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "My Card Name"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "nVidia"
        BoardName "My Board Name"
EndSection

Re: XFree86: caught signal 11 server aborting...

i guess maybe this is driver's bug, because i build and install the newest xf86-video-intel pkg(version 2.2.0),
so i reinstall old version(2.1.1-2) from arch repos and all ok.
