Does awn work with the built-in compositor that Xfce4 has? If so, how well?
That would be soo sweet if it does work.

I'm pretty sure, that it won't run under XFCE's native one. I think you'll need Compiz or Beryl.
If you prove me wrong report back; Compiz is the number one power waster on my laptop!

yeah it does work. I (temporarily) installed xfce4 and awn and i found that it works wonderfully, BUT there is a nasty bug in awn that will steal focus away from everything. I tried other docks and I came to kiba-dock (probably the most intensive of all the docks due to the built-in physics engine). kiba-dock performed wonderfully. I installed the svn version (don't think that there is a stable, is there?) and it crashed quite a bit. Overall kiba-dock was smooth and I DO NOT have a fast computer by any means.
so yeah, GO xfce!
