I just reinstalled arch under i686, and as I was installing xfce I took a good look at the depends and I saw a few gnome listings.
Why on earth does XFCE need gnome libs and gnome things to be installed?

What Gnome stuff?
Stuff like gnome panel was pulled in with xfce

that doesnt sound right. xfce has xfce4-panel

xfce4-xfapplet-plugin pulls in a lot of gnome deps. It allows you to run gnome applets in your xfce panel.
Run pacman -Rcs xfce4-xfapplet-plugin to remove it with the gnome deps.

What excatly does that file deal with though? It isn't a huge deal I was just curious as to why my xfce system was pulling in gnome packages

"XfApplet itself doesn't have any special functionallity; its only purpose is to display Gnome applets." according to
http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel- … let-plugin
It is part of the xfce4-goodies package. Personally I only install xfce4 and have everything I need.
