Grub boot image...not normal bootsplash

Greetings,

i dont know, but i searched for millions of years i think, and i something but that didnt help me.
so my question:
is it possible in archlinux, to make a background image in grub?? (not when the system is booting; an image whenn you can choice what you want to boot...)
like it is in suse, redhat and i think in gentoo...

i tried an how too, but it didn't work... (just added splashcreen=...to my menu.lst...)
do i have to patch the kernel like i have to do when i want a "bootsplash", or is there at all a possibillity??

edit: thats the link to the "how to"...its in german...i made an image (640x480) and changed the indexed colors to 14...then saved to *.xpm and the gziped...but didnt work.

Re: Grub boot image...not normal bootsplash

Standard grub does not  support  boot splash images like Redhat or Debian. Some distro's have patched grub with an extension that allows the bootsplash images, but Arch has not. The maintainers of grub do not want to add the extension to grub either.

Re: Grub boot image...not normal bootsplash

I've done this with lilo. I meant to write a HOWTO for that. oops.  Better get on it, eh? wink

Grub requires patch, you can get it from... gentoo linux :]

I want splash-screen in grub.

Re: Grub boot image...not normal bootsplash

Grub graphic loader is limited at 16 color only. In the near future there is no intention to include the patch, I think there is some internal (i mean in the project) contrast about that.

Lilo
PRO, is mature and well tested, has a lot of options
CON, you have to remeber to run it each time you update the kernel and/or change the configuration, otherwise the system does not boot

Grub
PRO, is easyer to configure than lilo, it is designed to be more flexible to load other os, if you change kernel/configuration you do not need to run it
CON, it is a new system therefore even if it is proven to be very stable is not 100% granted, has less option than lilo, but for common usage it is equivalent

Re: Grub boot image...not normal bootsplash

I'm old fashioned or something, I always found lilo's syntax waaaaay easier to configure than grubs. Plus, grub always gave me errors and lilo never did. Being lazy, I use lilo instead of figuring out what was wrong with grub...

As boot loaders, they are about equal, but grub gives you that interactive shell that you can use in a pinch... of course, a rescue disk would give you that flexibility soooooooo....

Lilo doesn't need patching for graphical, but there are patches for animations.  You could patch grub by making it in ABS if you want. Somebody should write a HOWTO for that too.

Re: Grub boot image...not normal bootsplash

Cause I hate patching stuff. Reminds me of band-aides and falling off my bike and stuff...
