Arch64 install question?

I just want to share my excitement. I have a new laptop on order that will arrive in a week or two. I got a:

Dell Vostro 1500
Core 2 Duo 7250 (2.0Ghz)
4 Gb of ram
250 HD
15.4 WSXGA+ (1680x1050)
Intel 4965AGN wireless
Intel X3100 graphics card
Bluetooth
2.0MP webcam with mic

anyways to my question. I have been reading a lot on Arch64. So if I am understanding this right these common programs only run with 32bit libs or chroot:

Flash
Java
Skype
And some win32 codecs which shouldn't be a big deal
Let me know if I am missing anything here

So again if I am reading this right. Going the chroot way seems to be much cleaner (Is this right). I want to use the cleanest way to run the few things that I need. I found this http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arc … bit_system

Is this the best way to go?
If not what would be better?

It sounds like your on the right track, and your future laptop sounds very cool!

It's been a while since I tried getting java and flash working with my 64bit install. I think alot of people have had good luck with the work arounds installing 32bit libs into arch64. Wine was, and maybe still is very quirky on arch64 without the 32bit libs fix aswell. I don't know much about skype.

I decided to go the 32bit chroot route using the same wiki you posted, and it's been very painless running what ever I need to from the 32bit enviornment. Not just for java and flash, cause there is the odd program here and there that doesn't like 64bit. Personally I think the chroot way is much cleaner.

I went the other way. I have enough lib32 libraries to run Flash (through nspluginwrapper), Skype static, and Lightscribe with the Lacie front end. I currently do not have a Java plug-in for Firefox. As far as codecs go, I don't think there's really much that doesn't currently run under 64 bit. I've had Wine running with a few more libraries and it seemed fine also.

I'm using the chroot way also. Flash is working fine and i find this to be much cleaner then the 32bit libs. I have had no problems with any codecs not running. so as far as i can tell everythin is workin fine.

Java : no plugin for firefox. You can find IcedTea in AUR but I don't test it.

Flash ? Nspluginwrapper is great. Or swfdec if you want to stay with open source software.

Skype : don't use it, so i can't say.

Win32 codecs ? VLC can play a lot of files without these codecs.

You can use chroot, but since I'm using 64 bits distro (1 year or so), I never used chroot.

As far as skype is concerned, i get quite crappy sound quality running it on linux. Dunno why this is, but it's a fact here.

I'm using arch64 with a 32bit chroot. I use sometimes wine and sype. I installed flash and java inside the arch32 chroot so when I (rarely) visit a website with flash/java, I close firefox and open the 32b version with "dchroot -d firefox" and it works great. No bad sound with skype. I ran some games with wine too.
