sound plays, can't record

I am trying to digitize from an analog recorder. When I play the recorder, it plays the sound through the speakers, but when I try to capture using ANY recording program (audacity, praat, krec) I get nothing. All levels are unmuted and at 100% on alsamixer (and kmix!). Here's the sound card:
00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
I'm not sure what other information is crucial, please let me know! There are no other sound problems (playback is fine). Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: sound plays, can't record

I had to run a jack from my headphone/speaker jack to the input jack on my machine.  It recorded fine then.

Re: sound plays, can't record

Yeh, that's my setup. Sorry I wasn't more clear -- the tape recorder outputs to the computer through the headphone jack and into the line in of the sound card. Sound comes out of the computer speakers (which means it is getting through the sound card), but I cannot capture it with any software recording program.
