Flash drive OS in IDE slot booted into ram...shut down drive?

With operating OS loaded into ram from flash/IDE source in primary IDE slot, can the flash drive be turned off without disrupting the system?

Re: Flash drive OS in IDE slot booted into ram...shut down drive?

I believe so, but I would simply try it. With everything loaded into RAM, you can't trash a disk and everything will reset itself if you reboot.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure about FlashDrives but I did this when my HDD died on me and I was using DSL loaded into RAM. I removed the DSL disk and everything worked fine. I'm relatively sure that you shouldn't need the Flash Drive any longer...

(TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT, I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE. Just a warning :-))

Re: Flash drive OS in IDE slot booted into ram...shut down drive?

I thank you for reply.

I have removed the power connector (floppy drive type) and the system persists.

The led indicators on the interface IDE adapter remain lighted.

Running gparted shows no devices...this may be true since the system is in ram.

When I selected kdiskfree to display the drives, I lost mouse and keyboard so had to reboot...no reboot without connecting the power (floppy type connector) so the power indicator brightens considerably.

The leds and the adapter remain lighted even with the mains removed from the computer!  Sneak circuit through other elements of the system no doubt since I have powered USB hub,etc connected.

The system still operates with the floppy connector removed and I am posting with everything in ram and the IDE flash disconnected from the power connector.

I wonder if you tried to reinsert the DSL to see if it would re-install?

Guess I need to run the system for a time to search out possible problems.  The power indicators suggest I may have possible interactions.

So far so good!

To reinitiate the flash drive requires a method to re-ID the drive.

How?
